I'm not one of "those" who listens and never utters a sound unless called by some prearrangement. During band openings, I generally call CQ anywhere between 50.385 and 50.425 on various frequencies. It's difficult during band openings to hear any "local" (75 to 200 miles) transmissions especially if they're all trying to operate around 50.4 and their antennas all all pointed in the same direction.  All was not lost however; I went down to the lower end and worked several Caribbean stations, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and a bunch of 4's, 5's, and 0's. I plan on running the Li'l Lulu receiver and transmitter for a short period during this upcoming VHF contest. They're on the work bench for some minor tweaking.

I'm using a 7 element long boom (31 foot) yagi on the tower. With the tower fully nested, antenna is at 34 feet; with the tower fully raised, the antenna is at 85 feet.

6 meters open right now (1:40 PM EDT) as I type; Sporadic E opening looks like centered over lower Michigan. Good reach in all directions for at least single or multi-hop contacts. MUF up to 59 MHz. Good opening last night too.
