The Official Results of the 2012 AM Transmitter Rally!!!

Well, the results are in!  We had some upsets this year, and some very interesting statistics.

2012 showed a higher number of states worked by individual stations - 29 was the highest in 2011, 34 (a 4 way tie, actually) for 2012.

As usual, 80 meters was the most popular band, however 40, 15, 20 and even 10 meters made reasonable showings.  The 2012 data shows a greater distribution of band usage than we had in 2011.

There were fewer logs sent in this year, however, in general, the numbers were higher.  We made more contacts in 2012 than in 2011.  We logged the exact same number of unique stations in 2012 as we did in 2011 (513 stations); the highest contact and state counts were higher.

This year, there is more data available.  I wrote a reasonably involved routine to pull out rig and some tube data.  This is very interesting.  The band usage data is also derived.

Ok, who won what?  

For overall highest points:  Congratulations go out to Jack W9T (W9GT) for a very impressive 187 points; 153 contacts in 34 states.  That is very hard to do.

In category A (classic commercial amateur equipment) Elizabeth W3K (WX3K) made an outstanding showing of 98 points running ONLY A RANGER winning the category!  Nice work!!

Jerry, KC8ZUL won category B (broadcast transmitter) with a poultry 12 points (no one else entered in that category), but he definitely takes the prize for the HEAVIEST transmitter (a Gates BC1F weighing in at some 2500 pounds!  Talk about HEAVY METAL!

Jack W9T (W9GT) takes category C (military transmitter) with his Federal Marine Rig - a real classic.

In the Home Brew world (category D), Steve KL7OF made a very respectable showing with 105 points.  Sounded good out here on the East Coast, that's for sure.  George AB2KC also did very well with his 4-1000 modulated by 304-TLs

The Class E category included W1E (WA1QIX) and Kerri KC2UFU both with very respectable showings, particularly in light of the fact that it was Kerri's birthday (Happy Birthday Kerri), and she had limited time to dedicate to the event, and Steve was in the beginning stages of the Norovirus (yuk!).

Category F (commercial transmitter followed by a linear amplifier) is always a popular category.  Our last year's winner, Ralph W3GL was the dominant force here, followed closely by Steve K4HX.

Category G (anything not covered by the above) is always interesting.  I think the K7DYY transmitters, the Flex rigs operating barefoot, barefoot rice boxes, etc. might need a separate category or even two categories.

That's very interesting!  Had no idea, but then again, I don't know much about some of these other events.  We ought to try to get some publicity about out little event - maybe we can get even more participation for next year    And of course it's great for AM and for the "main stream" to recognize it's a whole lot more popular than they might have imagined.

You can be assured, if it hadn't been for my 40 over 9 local noise level without the blanker in line and even with it the signals were at least 50% noise modulated, I could have done much better than 120 Q's...    Noise =  giant headache =  much aspirin...

Hopefully next year the noise will not be present and I'll be around to continue my quest for #1...

I sure appreciate the thanks, but this is an AM community event 

One of the cornerstones is AMFONE and the folks who run it - without which, we would not be able to get the word out nearly as well.  And, of course the AM community at large really makes it happen with all of the support and participation which is what makes it real.

By the way, I will still accept logs and update the results as logs are received.  The more information, the better, and it is also likely we can get the call count up even higher.  Hey, how about you folks out on the West coast?  We need more from your part of the world

Thanks, Steve. I was approached by local ham who asked me about it knowing I was an AM'er. He was very impressed with the QSO content and also the great audio quality of AM. Guess what? He wants to get on AM! I'm going to loan him an HQ-140x and a Globe Scout 65 until he can get his own gear. He getting his dipole up now. Everyone can give themselves a pat on the back for showing others what AM is like at its best.
