304-TH - Workin' it

« on: February 28, 2012, 10:12:05 PM »

Nothing to do with radio..This picture is from yesterday...A Bobcat on the prowl near the Thompson River about 5 miles from here. Looks well fed.
Lots of their tracks in the snow around here..House kittys on steroids. This one about 25 pounds of muscle. Rabbits, rats and mice on the menu.

Great photo!

Two summers ago, while visiting at home on the family farm in Kansas, I had the pleasure to watch a bobcat one afternoon.   He walked within 30 feet of the house, lay down and lazed in the sun for a bit.  Then he did a bit of bathing and wandered off along the creek looking for mice, prairie voles and such.

It is reassuring to see wild creatures doing so well.

Beautiful cat! Looks cuddly with the thick winter coat but that'd be a bad idea.. Bet it's got muscles like coiled springs.

If you have them in the neighborhood don't let your cat out at night.
Bobcats will eat them in a heartbeat.
When we lived on the farm in Missouri we worried about coyote's getting the cat.
Here in Tucson its the owl's.  Our cat was coyote trained but got out one night never to be seen again.
My neighbor told me that she had tried to keep barn cats and as fast as she would get one the owl's would get them.  I have yet to see a feral cat here in Arizona.

I've never seen a bobcat in the wild either. When I was living in Northern CA, a cougar ran across the road in front of my vehicle once. Actually, glided across the road is a better term. About 8' from nose to tail. I just had time to see that she was a nursing female and she was gone up the 10' cut on the left side of the road. What a beautiful animal. I like our North American critters (wolves, cougars, bobcats, etc) much better than I like the famed African big game.

Owls are cool, but they avenge themselves upon cats for all other birds.

Now that I think of it, I have seen one. It was not in the wild though. When I was growing up, a family that lived nearby had one as a pet. I guess they found it in the wild and raised it. The Facebook photo jogged my memory.
