304-TH - Workin' it

« on: February 19, 2012, 11:04:13 AM »

Then we found out why, after a monster wind storm a few weeks ago.
Location: Mt. Baldy, 13,684' near Breckenridge, CO.

Building blown over, tower and FM yagis in the dirt. Not enough snow to snowmobile up, too much snow to make it in a jeep.

Kudos to Gary, KB0DEB for his days of high altitude hiking to restore the site. 64 years old. One tough mofo! And a huge Tesla fan.

How do they get power up there? Do you have any other mountain top pictures. That one is just spectacular with the view!

The black cable supplying power to the site is visible in the lower right of the picture. Because of its length, maybe a mile, I believe it's a 480 volt feed, stepped down to 120 with a transformer inside the building.

There's a couple of TV and FM translators and a ham repeater up there. The site tech lives near 10K feet, so he's used to the thin air. He got a couple of tough 20-something mountaineering enthusiasts to help with the site repairs, they wanted their Denver FM and TV stations back-LOL.

Winds were gusting well over 100 MPH over much of the state during that storm, I had one of my AMs in Boulder die the same day. Drove out to the site and there are six power poles snapped off at the ground like match sticks.

It's like Mt. Washington..In the winter the 150+ MPH jet stream speeds up and lowers in altitude. When it occasionally hits mountaintop level after a strong front passes, it makes a mess. The winds curl down from the top and hammer the lower terrain. I don't have a picture of it, but I've seen a 100 foot radio tower owned by an electric company up there that was as wide at the base and it was tall. With VHF dipole antennas made from 1" tubing.

My folks took me to the top of Mt Washington via the Cog Railway when I was 16 and we were living down on LI, NY. I used to talk to a ham on 2M AM who baby sat Ch 8 and 13 out of Portland ME and had an eyball with him. That was a prettly long haul with about 5W out of a 2E26 doubler and a HB 5 el yagi made out of copper pipe and wire for the bottom of the folded dipole and fed with TV twin lead.

Since then living in MA and NH ive driven it with all sorts of vehicles, hiked it with all 3 of my sons individually and also with some friends. They have a large collection of photos of what the weather is like but the first time I went the sight of monster steel chains holding the lodge down was permanently etched in my brain.

Before retiring, the stations I worked for had state-wide translator network here in AZ.  Part of my job was to keep 'em on the air.

Most of them were on peaks over 10,000' elevation.

I know what you found as I've seen it as well, and I feel your pain.

Then the bean counters bitch about having to spend more $ to get it back on.

The guy that babysat Channel 8 on Mt. Washington, N.H. from 1964 to 2008 was Martin Engstrom, N1ARY. He wrote a book about his career at the TV station entitled"Marty On The Mountain". Of course, you may have meant earlier than that, Carl.

I was talking about the late 50's but damn if I can even recall a name or call Embarrassed

By 63 I was living in MA and then NH spring of 67 and Marty was sometimes on 2M as well as at various club meetings when he had time off. His Maine accent is as thick as it gets Smiley

"  build a bigger transmitter "

Its more like,,   fix the craped out krap that i already have .... ..

The 813 modded by 810s has bean sitting in parts fer the last 5 years. It always seems that something like the water heater or chain saw or breaks or the toilet craps out, then the honeydu rears its ugly head.....  and thar goos the time or the money.
