Icom 756 PRO3 on AM

Anyone used the 756 PRO3 on AM?
Is it good, bad or indifferent?

In stock form they are horrible.  You can build the ALC box that is outline here on this forum as a start.  This is a box that plugs into the back of the ALC jack on the icom and will allow you to achieve 100% modulation without the radio pulling back. Once that is done, They start work decent on AM.  You can then add in a good mic with a small outboard preamp and get the sound even better. In the end, You will be stuck at 5 to 6 KC wide on AM so they will never be HIFI unless that is dealt with. However, I know of several with outboard audio and the ALC box that sound damn fine.

I use mine on AM only when something is else is broken and I have the ALC box.
