Hi! I have a DX-60B with an OA2 VR tube mounted directly behind the PA cage. The manual does not show one. Could it have been added very late in the last production runs or, as someone suggested, could it be special "export" model? I have not popped the bottom off yet to see what it is connected to. Most likely it's for the oscillator one would suppose. Regardless it isn't shown on a 60B manual. Does anyone have a clue??? Mike-W9ZSL

Sounds like a user modification. I've never heard of any such VR tube in a DX-60 family TX.

Bought a $5 DX60B basket case at a 'fest a while back, also with an OA2. It looks homebrewed as socket doesn't match the other tubes. Always suspected it was used to regulate output voltages at the accesssory socket in the back for the VFO (but can't recall if 150v was available there?).

The OA2 is a 150 volt regulator. I would imagine that it was added to stabilize the plate voltage on the oscillator. Definitely not original. I will look for mods in my notes. Joe W4AAB

The 6CL6 is the oscillator. The 0A2 was added to stabilize the plate voltage. I guess it probably had chirp. I haven't found a mod in print yet. Joe W4AAB

It most likely is a user modification because the screws and socket don't match the other parts. The output of the accessory socket IS in fact 150 volts. I have a schematic on the way so I'll pop off the bottom and see what it is connected to. I had to change the dropping resistor in the matching VFO and it works great but the keying is sluggish with a crystal. Time will tell. Thanks for the help! It's a great little rig and I'd like to keep it as close to original as possible because it is in super condx. Mike-W9ZSL

There was a company called D8Pro that bought all the technical info from Heathkit, and therefore, none of it exists on the internet. I have some schematics of different Heath products , but don't have one on the DX-60. Joe W4AAB

Heath manuals are available at mods.dk for free with limited downloads or you can donate a manual or modification that they don't have to upgrade your membership. If you don't have anything hidden in the file cabinet, they will take a cash donation.Lots of good info.Joe WB2G.

Because the original DX-60B circuit didn't have a VR tube.

Because the original DX-60B circuit didn't have a VR tube. I agree. It never had a VR tube. But the subject was confusing as presented. Pete

The simple action would have been to just open up the DX-60B and trace the wiring to and from the VR tube rather then several days of random member speculation.

Hello Mike, are you going to leave the regulator tube in there and do you think it's a good idea?

The Heathkit MT-1, Cheyenne is a similiar transmitter that uses a VR. But, the Cheyenne also has a built in VFO. FYI you might want to compare schematics to the DX-60.
