Hello:

I think it is time to begin planning the 2012 AM Transmitter Rally (http://amfone.net/Amforum/index.php?topic=26349.0) which has been so graciously organized by WA1QIX.    Anyway, I think it is a good idea to nail down a date, so a notice can go out to ER before their deadline, and those who want 1X1 call signs can get them and so on.

I am mentioning it now because the last two times were sort of hastily set up and I think there is some benefit from starting to discuss it earlier ahead of all the holiday distractions.

I would like to see if it would be possible to combine the "Heavy Metal Rally" with the "AM Transmitter Rally".  The combination would be better than the sum of the parts.  I had planned on contacting the folks in charge, but haven't done it yet  Roll Eyes

Everyone participating in the "Classic Heavy Metal" category (or just "Heavy Metal" - and using ER's definition either way) of the AMTR would, by extension, be in the "Heavy Metal Rally", and ER could award its usual prizes, etc.

The HMR would benefit from the logging software, collection of logs, etc. that is part of the "AM Transmitter Rally".  The HMR would very likely enjoy a wider participation.

Both events would benefit by the power of joining forces - AM would get a very wide exposure.

Anyway, that was the idea.........................

Last year, only 3 ER Heavy Metal Rally logs were submitted. This year's rally is set for December 30th as announced by ER.

That sounds like a good idea to me.

ER to my thinking, seems to have a great track record for picking really bad dates.  They were okay last year but the year before I think they picked the evening after Christmas or something like that.
12/30 may be okay but why does it have to be so close to a holiday?   I guess I have to ask Ray that instead of posting it here.  I don't see why it can't be in mid-January unless all the winter weekends are taken after year's end.

I think this is what is going to happen anyway!  The AMTR will probably be near to the end of January or the start of February, as usual  Cheesy

Same here. I thought the original purpose was to add an additional AM operating event. Wouldn't be bad to see another one in November or March.

The very nice thing about having it in the winter is the lack of lightening storm static and of course the good propagation.  This year, assuming 10 meters stays open, I expect to see a fair amount of activity up there during the event.  Should be fun!

Maye this year you could restrict these events to frequencies ouside the AM Window so the residents there don't have to put up with all the splatter and trash from the unmodified boatanchors these events usually draw. I suggest 3842 as a calling frequency.

The AM window faces the east to catch the sunrise in the AM!  Cool

Oh, that AM window.

I'd heard stories about a tiny, mythical land that AM signals were restricted to, that no other mode was supposed to use. Thankfully, it was only a bedtime story as I could find no reference to it in reality. No rule book lists it, none of my radios show it on the dial, nor did the mixture of sounds coming from their speakers confirm it.

But if it was true, wouldn't it make sense that an event for AM operation would take place on those frequencies specifically?

That's what I thought. Grin

I forgot that people bought their own frequencies.  Which FCC form does one need to fill out to OWN the Window?  20KC wide is condoned by some Window owners and seems to be proud of it!

" I prefer skylights. "

The NVIS window might be OK for local work, but if u want to get out, regular windows work better.

When you toss a boatanchor overboard, water will splatter everywhere.

The hell with this "window" crap (IT'S BEEN BROKEN FOR YEARS)
and combining the events business!

Lets keep the two events (Corntests?) running separately so Don
Chester can P&M in his usual style about the weekend QRM on the
bands and I have a better chance to widen my score to making a
clean sweep  on the AMTR again this coming season.

It was fun getting back in the contest mode last year and I'm looking
forward to this years session.

Steve, have you made any upgrades to the logging software?

I think the AMTR should be at least 4 times a year (one each season). I like to hear Don P & M. Isn't it time for QEX/QST  Huh

Make it the same weekend as some sort of ARRL CW contest or maybe even SS. Then the entire spectrum would be contested. This could be the new definition of Pandemonium--
