Thanks to those of you who commented and offered suggestions on getting the old Heathkit working.  Adding some heavy duty power resistors to the HV power supply did the trick.  I trashed the old ones.  I was able to load it up into my dummy load on 7194kc since that's the only crystal I have.  I get about 56W out so I'm pretty happy with that.  This is all following the suggested procedure in the manual.  I guess it's now time to get to restoring one of my receivers so it can go on the air.  Maybe need a vfo, too, as rockbound operation seems a little restrictive.  In the meantime I might read up about some of the AM mods around for improving the transmitter.  Don't know if I want to mod it or not.  My other transmitter is a Viking II that also needs work.  I may save up my money for getting it going as I plan to make it my main boatanchor transmitter.  All for now.

Jeff,
Congrats on getting your DX-60A up and running.  That is the rig I started with in 1966.  Later I acquired a DX-60 and had a blast using it on Straight Key Night this past year.  My next job will be to re-engineer the HR-10 for some better performance.
Look for a nice HG-10 VFO and you will be all set.
