Warning, there are a lot of good radio stories in the 30s era Popular Science so you too may become an addict.

Scary tip on tempering red hot drill bits in mercury was my favorite in that issue!

And did you notice Professor Theremin also made an appearance with his soon to be famous electronic instrument?

There was some pretty scary stuff back then.  One of the previous issues showed a researcher in Missouri who was going through corn fields with his portable X-ray machine to see what impact it had on corn.  I have a feeling he didn't live long enough to benefit from the social security program started later during the depression.
