Is there a way to change the number of posts displayed per page??

As things now are the number of "stickies" is increased, so the number of NEW posts per page is reduced... Especially in QSO, by quite a bit.

Would also suggest reformatting the way the sticky topics appear on the topic list so that they take up less vertical space?? Hopefully there is a way to do that in the admin toolbox...

I agree there are a lot of stickies in the QSO forum.  Unfortunately the only way to change the # of topics per page is to change them globally.  Currently it's set to 25.

There is no way to modify the space taken up by the stickies, without (presumably) going into the forum code.

We might be able to edit the subject lines a bit on the stickies to reduce the space used, perhaps combine a couple like 15&20m activity, as six and ten are now.

Something to look at.

Or perhaps create a separate "On the Air Activity" category.

That's an excellent approach, Johnny. We could call it On-Air Activity Alerts and just have folks use the band in their subject line, something like that. Even if we split it into 2 categories - 40,80,160 and 20,15,10,6 - it would certainly reduce the amount of page one used for sticky posts by half.

I would suggest moving the "Watch" stickies to a separate "Band Activity" or  "Alerts" category, and specify that band watch alerts to be just for that... activity alerts, and maybe like the sale/trade and ePay forums closed to replies. Ones for specific bands could be continued, or have the user specify the band and/or frequency in the subject line. With the present stickies, it is too easy for a "watch" posting to morph into a thread related to the original topic, which in turn eventually veers from "closely related" to completely off topic.

It is simple enough to start a new thread in QSO or Technical Forum titled Re: (subject) if one wants to continue the discussion.  The specific purpose of the "Watch" postings should be to alert others that one is calling CQ on a specific frequency or that one hears an AM DX signal or something else of significant interest happening on a certain band or frequency as, for example, when one discovers a nice hole on 40m and calls CQ but no AM station immediately replies. Maybe one would even want to post an alert just before calling the first CQ. This could help quickly establish AM activity on that frequency, before other modes move in or some member of a dead-air group comes on to notify you that it's "their" frequency because they monitor it all day.

Of course, it helps when you have internet access in the shack, something I need to work on.

A new Band Watch section has been created just below the AM Bulletin Board Section. Post your activity reports and QSO requests for each band there. The stickies in the QSO will be gone.

Thanks for the nudge Bear.

What about 12m, or at least make the 10m section 10-12m? That could be a good AM band, sometimes open when 10 is still closed, and is somewhat a sparsely populated neglected band that could be low-hanging fruit for AM if we jumped on it.

many forum softwares permit the user to select the number of posts per page, surprised this one does not have such a provision that the admin side can enable for users?

regardless could we bump it up to 40-50 posts per page? It would serve to keep many good threads from "sun setting" so quickly...

ps. good idea to create the band watch section! Cheesy

We could set it to 500 posts per page (probably  Grin).  Unfortunately there are still users with slow connections and smaller displays; I'd rather not disadvantage them when it's easy enough to click the [1 2 ... n] at the bottom.

Most certainly vBulletin and phpBoard allow that, but this software doesn't.  It's set globally.

I know, I use a dialup from the QTH, so I know what the load times are on a 24kb connection! (yeah, that's how crap the local phone co lines are!) How about a compromise? Add 10. That should make it work, and keep the number of active posts up...

Perhaps it is time to consider "migrating" to some of the forum software that you mentioned??

Nah, we're good. Especially now that the sticky topics have been cleaned up. Just counted 5 posts active today in QSO, 7 active as of yesterday, and 10 with no activity in 2 or more days, so it's natural for them to scroll off (all the way to Page 2) eventually as they are replaced with new topics. It generally takes several days for that to happen to the point where most of the topics on page one are replaced and move to page two.

If it were a case of active posts continually scrolling off, then it would make sense. That's not the case, though.

Imo, posts become less active when they can not be seen on the top page... it's just the nature of things.

On some topics there is nothing more to say... that happens too.

Suggest that we take a public poll, and see - after some explanation/discussion of the issue (maybe in the QSO section?) - what the masses think.

You know my vote... Cheesy

  Hey Bear,

I think your missing/forgetting a point or two here.

This is NOT a democratic forum. It's a Benevolent Dictatorship!

At least that was declared by the first sponsor and there's been
no published change to that policy with the new management that
  I've noticed...

If you don't like the policy's here, feel free to move on...  Grin Grin Grin

John, laptop. Not the size or number per screen - number per page.

Ralph, I have moved on, long ago... the question is where have I gotten?

bear crank up your video resolution, not the Font size  On your Video Card

For instance I am set at 1280x720  for a 16:9 ratio

video resolution settings will change how much on a page may be displayed at once

This site sez Best Viewed with
FireFox.
Optimized for
1024 x 768 resolution
