3D films became popular in the US back in the 50s, but, like cathode-ray TV, experimentation with the technology was carried out in Germany decades earlier. Berlin’s Federal Archives have discovered a pair of 3D propaganda films from pre-war Nazi Germany. The 30-minute black and white creations were discovered by filmmaker Philippe Mora, who is currently working on a documentary looking at how the Nazis used imagery to manipulate reality.
This dates back to about the same time that US Olympic star Jesse Owens' performance in Berlin was broadcast via closed-circuit TV, using images displayed on cathode ray picture tubes instead of mechanical scanning with rotating discs.
