I began reading the paper and wondered how old it was.  1961??

Probably most modern diodes (like 1N1508) that I use have overcome many of the concerns outlined in this paper.

But, when I have more time I'm sure it may be worth reading through.

The GE paper is talking about large HV rectifiers, for the most part than 1N5108s. There is information that describes why avalanche diodes don't need RC networks, and when to use these. Also on how to select the C and R. Its one of the more descriptive reports on the subject; some still wonder when to bypass rectifiers, when to use matched diodes, etc.
