The Carnival Splendor, with no power, now has food for all the passengers: SPAM. No this is not the Society for the Preservation of Amplitude Modulation". Instead it is canned pig slop..

http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/west/view/20101109cruise_ship_adrift_off_san_diego_after_fire/srvc=news&position=also

Of course after a few days SPAM, this diet can get tiresome. So here are a few varieties to spice up the culinary dishes available:

Chicken Fried SPAM® and SPAM® Flautas from Pat Knight (the original Potentate of Potted Meat)
Doug Holloway’s Stuffed SPAM® with Sauce a la Pepto
Blimpie’s feet-long SPAM® Sandwich
Billy Bob’s SPAM® on Ritz Pops
Conway’s SPAMISH™ Fly
Carl Hickerson’s Kosher Gas Attack
Fred Reese’s SPAMWURST™
Kevin Rollins’ SPAMALAMA™ Ding Dongs
SPAM® Cordon Bleu and SPAMATOLAH™ from John Myers (Chef SPAM®)
SPAM® Culinaire and SPAM® Tenderloin Kebobs with SPAM® and Grilled Corn Chorizo from David Spooner

source: http://www.spamarama.org/history.html

This cruise will be memorable for all onboard.  Just think, NO internet, No showers, and everyone smells of SPAM Grin

EDIT: Maybe once ship docks in San Diego, the passengers will be met by Norm, WB6TRQ..maybe he will hand out SPAM packets full of Hoisy schematics.  Wink

It seems like the big cruise ships need to pool together and have a stand by ship to transport all those folks to safety when there's a major problem like this.
I know, it apparently doesn't happen but it did and what to do with 3900? people

It can turn into a Katrina thing.......the stadium.
All that humanity, no services what so ever. Food spoiling etc etc

That Spam must be the emergency rations down low in the lockers.  All my time in the navy I really can't remember eating Spam.  Navy chow was generally pretty good.  Generally.  (Never eat the SOS made with hamburger.  That's a last resort  dish they make when they are running out of food).

p.s.  I like the hickory smoked Spam.   Just crave it some times.  It can be hard to find though.

I only ever went of one cruise from Fl to Cozumel, Mexico and it was the best experience I had ever had on vacation. To top it off I won the trip as part of a sales campaign I was involved with in one of my other chapters of life. I was told the ship used a gallon of fuel every six inches. Is that possible? Great food and great weather as well Grin Grin Grin Grin

I can imagine people wanting their money back. I can alo imagine the cruise line just smiling and attempting to pro-rate the refund, despite the fact that the entire vacation was ruined by this ordeal.

Reportedly, the company is offering each passenger a full refund PLUS a free cruise to replace the defunct one.

Vacation ruined?

Nah, you pay extra for this type of "once-in-a-lifetime-experience".
Just think of the tales you will be able to tell your office mates, and grandchildren - about the time you had to eat SPAM on the good ship lollypop!

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/nov/11/local/la-me-cruise-ship-20101112/3
Quotes:
According to passengers disembarking in San Diego, there was hot dog salad, green bean sandwiches, cereal, Pop Tarts, hot dogs mixed with deviled eggs, bottled water. And, said Chris Harlan, a dental technical from Buena Park, the famously maligned canned meat, which he said he refused: "I'm not paying this kind of money to eat Spam."

"Everybody got a morale boost when they came over the loudspeaker and said, 'Raid the mini-bars!'" said Levant Kerry, 69, a retired manufacturer from British Columbia who was traveling with his wife, Barbara. "There were cheers all over the ship."

Candice Van Leeuwen passed on the beer — free, but warm — and opted instead for the champagne — also free and warm. She had gotten married Nov. 6 and disembarked Thursday from her honeymoon cruise aboard the Splendor still sporting her wedding veil.

"My husband and I got to be together the whole time," said the 30-year-old from Moreno Valley, sanguine as only newlyweds can be. "What's wrong with that?"

Flores remembers the smell of human waste, rotten food and sour milk. And she turned unhappily away when she heard the shipboard band strike up a ballad from the movie "Titanic."

"I didn't want to hear that song," she said, "in the middle of the ocean."

END Quotes.

The Spam would be OK for a day. The main problems with it as a daily ration are the very high grease content and salt content. Spam is delicious but meant to be used for a single sandwich or a slice or two as a snack, not to be eaten by the can as a daily ration. In general, I eschew any meat product that the cats won't eat.

There's a lot of meat products out there that are not good to eat daily including hot dogs, most sausage, Spam, McDonalds "meat" items, de-viled ham, anything pickled (how bad was it they had to pickle it!), corned beef, etc. The cruise line might have offered MREs. At least those could be heated. I'm glad they are refunding the money. That's how they will keep the customers.

After my first-born was weaned from mommy's boob and gained competence with solid food, she would buy him "meat sticks", which closely resembled canned vienna sausage, but contained less salt and grease.  I found them delicious and would snack on them between meals.  They almost always got eaten up before they ever made it to the kid.
