Greetings, all.  I am a neophyte, so please do not laugh at me too hard.

I am trying to get a Viking Ranger I up and running. Every time I plug it in, I hear the 5R4 HV rectifier arc-ing and then one of the fuses in the power cord blows. This occurs within 1-2 seconds of power-on. I think this means one or both of the power supply filter caps are bad, so I will have to replace them.

But that's not what I want to ask about.

I am trying to get a T/R relay switch to work with this beast. If I am understanding the Ranger schematic correctly, there is 110V sent to a jack labeled "J-5" in the back chassis whenever the transmitter is keyed. So I think I can use this to power the relay. This "J-5" jack is located directly above where the AC power cord enters the chassis. My trouble is, I don't know sort of male connecter fits into it. The elements of this jack are spaced like an FT-243, and in fact, I tried fitting a crystal just as an experiment, but the prongs are too big to go in, even though the spacing is exactly right. I suppose I could do something like solder some wires on the jack inside the chassis to reroute the power someplace more convenient, but I'd rather not have to do that.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? The Ranger documentation I have seen is absolutely no help at all, so I'm hoping one of you all can hit me with a clue bat.

Thank you.

Thank you, Pete, I wish I had read that thread before I posted.
