Pete, What are you smoking?

Your subject title, Chalk one up for the good guys", probably means nothing to the majority of the forum since the forum doesn't revolve around one small geographical area. If you're bestowing accolades on some"good guys" whoever they may be, you probably should be more specific.

I'm not one of the 3 so that counts me out unless you count my flushing the toilet a few minutes ago.

Just goes to show you what happens when you get all your news from one source, because your world revolves around one small geographical area called Newington, CT.

After the fact Frank, maybe. The good guys didn't win, the bad guys screwed up. That's twice since Christmas that inept bad guys, not the good guys, averted a bad day for many.

4 times in the last year the bad guys have struck. Twice they succeeded. Twice they screwed up. The good guys didn't stop them, they caught them after the fact. Things have changed over the last year or so, and the bad guys know it.

But for the grace of God was the outcome 'good'. Fortunately the man of the street remains vigilant, because someone is asleep at the switch. Just look how close the latest bad guy came to escaping.

I miss the good old days when we caught the bad guys before they struck. Close to 8 years of no success, one year with two successes and two near misses.

Chalk one up for wishful thinking.  Roll Eyes

The Brits beat back the Zulus repeatedly, and declared victory each time.

The found out the hard way that all those attacks were just gathering knowledge of the Brits' defenses to prepare for the big attack.

Part of me wonders if Zulu-esque tactics aren't in play here.

Todd, you might consider the drone wins if you want to get political

For what it's worth, I don't think he was trying to get political, Frank. There are multiple rungs on the proverbial ladder his point can be applied to. I think he's discussing the more systemic failures.

We're all glad for the outcome and happy for the people who alerted the authorities promptly, but the fact that anyone can park an SUV full of propane, gasoline, and fertilizer (albeit the wrong one) in Times Square then walk away from it, get on an Emirates Airlines flight while on the no-fly list and damn near escape points to a few things we need to shore up around here. It was only pure luck those failures turned out to be benign, and we can't count on that.

Politics doesn't enter into that at all, but procedure sure does. That's the real issue.

Of course, I can't speak for Todd (and he sure can), but I think that's a nice apolitical way of putting it.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Thom.

Frank, we were using drones and air strikes previously as well, they serve a useful purpose overseas but not here. So it's a moot point. Except to the bad guy who apparently claims to have been spurred on to create a "man made disaster" because of the strikes.

It's not about keeping score, it's about keeping track - of what works and what doesn't. Clearly what we've been doing recently has changed, and isn't working. We've been lucky, and I'm certainly thankful for that as well as thankful for the street merchants and police who saved the day. Had the bad guy been better trained, smarter, whatever, it never would've gotten to that point, unfortunately.  Same goes for Mr BVDs.

I'm a Yankees fan, I like to win too. Wink
