It's not just old mics --  many are current production.

Delighted to see this shot of one of my main's.

And yeah, while an RCA mic would look very cool alongside Ray with you crooning into it, many if not most of the ribbon mics from that vintage are actually rather fragile.  They couldn't take more than one episode of your BJB, for example, which would profoundly stifle your ability to express yourself.

Thanx for pointing this out.   If you scroll down the TOC page you will come to Bonus Material.  don't miss that.  Lots of good stuff down there.  A hodgepodge of interesting mic/radio/ham items and pdf files.

Does anyone rebuild those classic ribbons?

One thing that I really like about them is they've got one heck of a proximity effect. Talk close and low and almost anyone can sound like Barry White.

For some reason prox effect seems to be frowned upon and I have always wondered why.  It never bothered me.  I always kind of liked being able to work the mic by getting close and dropping my voice.  But you see ads for mics like the RE20 and they say "minimal proximity effect."

Because very few radio personalities know how to work a mic any more. They just sit in front of them and blab. Or sit around a table and blab. So sounding consistent regardless of proximity is a desirable thing these days. Makes for more consistent but bland audio. Go listen to airchecks of DJs from the past using SM-5s and ribbons, you'll hear them work the mic for effect and fun.

IMO, a microphone is as much of a musical instrument as anything else.

I've equipped my main radio station with Neumans and SM-7s with the bass cuts turned off to maximize proximity and showed the DJs the basics how to use the mic as an instrument. They love it. "Gawd, I sound good!" Big, full and chesty. The RE series mics have an approximate 10 db/octave cut at the bottom end to minimize proximity, but I believe the 40-100 Hz spectrum is important, as long as your transmitter and processing can pass it. This is one reason why the Class E rigs can sound so darn good.

I learned from our old school PD that you'd also be surprised how much better you often can sound by speaking while standing, rather than while sitting. In the 'old days', they rarely sat down while speaking into the mic, that only happened after TV. Only police dispatchers sat down while speaking. Get yourself a floor mic stand and try it. I need to as well, LOL.

Heh he heh heh he said CHESTY

It is true that the best voice happens when standing up. Full cavity for resonance and for breathing.

I looked up the response spec on one of the RCA ribbons and sure enough, there's a pronounced kickup in the low end,  right where you would expect, Bill, 40-70cps.

http://www.coutant.org/bk11/freq.gif

But it's not just the MOSFET-based transmitters that will sound great with such a mic, it's the critters like the Raytheon with enormous iron to pass that low end. Wait and see what Derb brings us.

I have a 1961 Reslo RBM ribbon mic, the same kind seen in some of the early Beatles stage and studio photos. It's got a similar proximity effect in the low end, and can sound really good if you know where it is and how to work it.  This is another reason it's important to listen to an air monitor while you're on, and/or get the occasional MP3 aircheck recording from a receiving station of known good quality.

See 'round about TRT 1:08

As for working the mic anymore, I've seen photos for large diaphragm condenser microphones like the Neumann that are supposed to hang down to be addressed, instead pointed "AT" the user looking at the bottom of the housing at the other end of the pipe thread.  Sheez !

Bob Heil's mics get criticized for prox effect and I always thought, that's what I like about them.  I can operate my station standing up so next time I'll give it a try -- it will be interesting to hear any difference.  Standing is better for me anyway, better for my back.

I was going to look at the microphones  but when you said porn I was not tempted that much.
Is it just good looking operators or Porn?

Looking at true porn sites can put you in jail.
We recently had a local that was arrested for having child porn on his computer and he was most likely traced back from a child porn site.
I would be careful about using the word porn on the internet.
I would also be careful about looking at porn sites.

No Tim, he wasn't "funning" you...

You can get your self  in DEEP FROCKY using that term!  Fortunatly most the
regulars on here are familiar with your use of the BJB lexicon but the witch hunt
is on for all things porn related and quite a few people are doing hard time for
indulging.

There are special police ops set-up looking for any reference on the internet to
the subject and just a casual mention of the word draws their attention so a word
to the wise...  cool-it!

Hours will disappear like minutes and the lawn will not mow itself.......  Tongue

An amazing amt. of tech. and historic info and still more "bonus" pics and info below that. The tower failure and .5 megawatt AM station material is neat stuff.

PAUL,
There were pics in the mike site of A.M. studios with turntables.....there should have been stirrings of the heart!!

And a sound guy for motion pictures. You can really hear the difference in movie sound, or for the Left Coast people reading, FILM sound, from the early movies and even the 70's and what we hear now.
Now the actors wear wireless mics hidden on them.

Oh, please.

Any reference? Why would you think that? Porn isn't illegal unless it involves underage or non-human protagonists. If some FBI goon squad mobilized every time someone uttered the word "porn", they'd be chasing 10,000 false positives for every actual hit. They don't have the time, money, or resources for that.

The word "porn" is common in today's internet lexicon to describe must-see pictures of something, and the word itself has never got anyone in trouble. You guys really need to catch up with the times. People are constantly posting "food porn", "car porn", "guitar porn", "rig porn", and now "mic porn", with not one "nekkid" person in it. Not one single person has ever gotten in trouble for it, nor should they.

This is Jefferson's America, not Stalin's Russia.

Cool it yourself.

Acapulco. Actually, it's "Acapulco de Juarez". It's a resort city on Mexico's Pacific coast.

A Google search will lead you to all kinds of lovely food porn, too.

Just so you know, the quality of Mexican weed is not what it was 25 years ago. It's only "bad ass" insofar as that's what it tastes like. I was surprised to find out they're still smuggling the stuff in.

This has been a public service announcement.
