One of my university colleagues recently shared some nice older photos of his father and his radio setups of the 30's onward. Herman Dumler, W9IIO spent his entire life involved in electronics and built some very nice looking homebrew gear. Attached are a couple of photos along with his story of the sinking of the U.S.S. Helena in the battle of Kula Gulf.
The first photo is a very early setup of his and the receiver looks familiar but I cannot identify it, hopefully one of you may recognize it.
The second photo is of my colleague Mike sitting in front of his father's radio setup.
There are a couple of additional photos in the next posting.

I believe the rx in the first pic is a RME 9-D. lemme look at the other pics. At one time I had a matching W8DK QSL like in the first photo.
the old QSL's are so much better than the crap they make now. No personality.

Thanks for posting those pix Rodger. I agree with you Derb, my first thought was "those QSLs are a lot bigger than modern ones" and "I wonder if I can get big ones made like those?" I guess the postage these days would be more. That one shack photo of the ham's son as a boy was really cool.

Rob,
The thanks go to Mike for sharing this with me.
For those who didn't look at the Word document in the first post you are missing this young radioman's very interesting account of his ship sinking and the aftermath that appeared in the Chicago Tribune in 1943.

Great story. The navy in WWII, the big one, sure had it tough at times. I really felt for the guys left in the water and hope many were picked up later. Thanks for the reminder to read the word.doc.

Here's a free scratch and dust remover that works pretty well. It's put out by Polaroid. If anyone is interested I'll try to find a link that works. I've had this utility for many years I love these kind of pics -- we need more!!

I did a search an got nothing but a bunch of ads and download links to other SW. Anyone interested in the Polaroid dust and scratch remover email me and I'll pass it along. Do it either on AMFone email or the one below. It's not a big file Al al@w1vtp.com
