This is almost as bad as the antenna electrocution.

Watch the news tonight for the story about a boy on a plywood "saucer" with a helium balloon he and his dad built. The tether broke, and he was last seen at about 8,000 feet headed toward Denver International from Ft. Collins.

not a good scene

I just caught the news on that.  Indeed not a good situation.

Another fine example of evolution - survival of the fittest. The gene pool needs cleaning from time to time.

Just off the wire at 4:12 PM EDT:

"The child's fate was unclear, and there was no sign of him in the balloon when it landed. Authorities feverishly searched for any sign of the child on the ground, including in the neighborhood where he lives."

I can only wonder what must have going through the kid's parents minds when they first found out that their son was onboard that balloon.

Did he jump?
When ?
Did he survive ?

No one on board when it grounded out, survivable landing.

The parents are storm-chasers, pursue extra-terrestrials, and have been on at least one of the networks.

There's a LOT more to this story ...

Just hoping the kid made it ...

Paul,

I don't know; I am trying to find this out.

I have a nagging feeling that this may have been some kind of a hoax, based upon your description of the parents' interest in E-Ts, etc. I am wondering if the boy was ever onboard the balloon. I hope this was not some kind of sick publicity stunt.

I hope the 6 year old didn't fall out or jump because of fear.

Saw the news coverage. The balloon looks too small to lift even a 50 lb. kid, never mind the weight of a passenger basket. Judging from that, and taking into account that rumors about the kid "climbing into it" are unreliable, I think the balloon itself is the only thing that got loose, and all the rest of it is just public and media hysteria.

He was hiding in a cardboard box in the garage attic at home.  Never on-board.  I hope they send his parents the bills for the blackhawk chopper fuel, etc....  And hopefully the FAA still piles on fines in $1K increments...

Interesting video here.

Jeopardy contestant and newscaster Wolf Blitzer interviews the family. Little "Falcon" says "we did this for the show".   Falcons parents are barely coherent ... what a surprise.

As soon as I heard the boy was safe in the attic, I wondered if all of this wasn't a publicity stunt.
