304-TH - Workin' it

A neighbor (up the hill) set up a motion-triggered camera to photograph wildlife.
He got this shot of three Mountain Lions gorging themselves on a deer.

The worst part is cleaning their litter box.

How do you get them to trigger reliably? I've got one and all I see is open space where something walked or wandered through (I've tested it by walking through it's field of view) and it takes so long to trigger and take the shot that whatever it is that was close enough to activate the sensor has already passed out of view! Other than some sort of stationary setup like a salt like or a gut pile or feeding station, how do you get pictures of game animals?

Specifically I'm trying to get a handle on the pack of coyotes that frequent our neighborhood, making life tough on fawns and cats! I keep finding chewed up fawn pelts out back and the population of cats is ever decreasing. Maybe I need to bring in some of those bad assed cats to teach the coyotes some respect.  Grin

Hi Kevin,

These lower end (1st generation) cameras tend to have a slow trigger.
The newer Cuttyback's, and others like them, have multiple settings for trigger of single pix or even 15 and 30 seconds of video. Of course they're in the $350 to $500 class.

If you're coyote searching hang a chicken leg or pork chop out in front of the camera about 4' high and see what happens.

I like these kind of cougars.

I got my other deliveries today. Now have to make and install.

Hi Buddly,

Mine is a WildView 2mp, seemed like a middle of the road unit, on sale last fall. My neighbor has one of the cuttybacks and says it works well. This one can shoot high or low res or video and has an IR trigger and IR LED flash. I don't understand why some trigger faster than others. Seems they all use the same kind of IR sensors.

I'll try the dangling pork chop trick. I find their scat, lots of tracks in the winter, hear them howling very close by, and I'm worried about my cats. I want to introduce some of them to some little friends of mine. At about 3400 fps.... Grin

Nice kittys! the outdoor kind! Many people don't like wildcats, but they serve a good purpose in keeping wild herds of prey animals healthy by (generally) catching the older and sickly animals. If I were hunting for meat+sport and a cat leapt out and took the deer I'd been following or was sighting in, I'd consider it the cat's right to do so. Cat's doing it to survive. Good sportsmanship is not only for human meat-hunters. Nice to see three of them together. No waste of the deer there.
