OK you gurus out there, now that I've jumped whole hog into this late 40's Globe King 400's I have, what is the difference in these coils, are some interchangable with each other....is there some book out there on this stuff..  hi hi...

And .. why does the 400C modulator have one less tube than the 400B .. Mr. Hambone got into the B looks like...an additional front panel toggle too, though wires are now cut out for some reason., and toggle remains, Couplates cut out as well on the B version....yikes.

The JVL,MEL, etc are plug in coils. They are usually designed for different bands and provide coupling from one stage of the transmitter to the other. You'll have a driver coil to get RF to the final and a Final output coil for the tank circuit. There were other designations for medium power and high (legal limit) power.

Thanks Fred... I have figured out that the heavier construced ones are higher power, etc, and each stamped with band coverage, but was wondering if a 40 MEL coil can be interchanged with a 40 MCL coil type, both are small and have a small linking coil, but one is in the center of the coil and the other on the end...appear to be wired about the same but not sure.  Guess I will just plug it in and give it a try on the GK400B - going slowly on this project..

The OSC and BUFFER use MEL-type coils and the PA GRID uses JVL coils. My GK400  didn't have complete coil sets for 160/80/40, so I had to made my own OSC and BUF coils. Here's a picture of my GK400 RF deck with coils inserted for 80M operation and a close-up picture of the BUFFER coil. Hope this helps...

Thanks Jerry, that is what I will likely have to do for 160 meters I suppose, I do have some 80 meter coils, mostly 40 meter coils, but I have a 40 MCL and a 40 MEL, same size but the link is over one of the ends on the MEL and over the middle on the MCL coil, and the pins are wired differently.  The manual on the 400B is not real good, in fact I guess I am used to Heathkit operating instructions as this manual has none really, mostly warning about the HV... a point not lost to me...hi hi ...but unclear about other coils...so will stick with the MEL types for the OSC and BUFFER.   I am very anxious about getting mine on the air...I see you have an early version with the 2E26 - both of mine, the 400B and 400C have the 807 on the RF deck.
