Who needs Festivus? On the ride to NH this morning I heard that Skowhegan was founded on this date in 1823.   If anybody happens to speak to Timmy throughout the day you might want to wish him "Happy Skowtown Day."   Next year we should all plan a bash around the date complete with tours of HLR Mountain and maybe a snow pissing contest?   Ed

According to Wikipedia:

"The first residents of Skowhegan, Maine, arrived in winter, on February 5, 1823. The question begs asking, why would anyone in their right mind want to settle in Maine in February? They were the steerage passengers aboard the HMS Sweetwater, commanded by Captain Riley Pissgums. The Sweetwater's destination was to be the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but the captain decided to make an unscheduled call on the winter Maine coastline to drop off a number of the undesired passengers and stowaways. The wealthy Puritans on board were to continue on to Massachusetts. Left behind with the new residents of Maine were several weeks' rations of food, tools suitable for building cabins, seeds for growing hemp fiber, and several large casks of grog." <edit>

Sounds more like the back-to-earthers of 1972 or thereabouts.  I don't know the story of Skowhegan but Maine has been populated by Europeans since around 1607 or so.  Popham, Robinhood, Arrowsic and Damariscove Island come to mind.   Do tell us more about Captain Pissgums.   Ed

maybe a snow pissing contest?

More like pissing in a bucket while transmitting on 75 meters.
