It's too bad Keith got our weather (you know, the stuff that caused TWO tornadoes about 30 miles south of me [the Wheatland, WI tornado was an F3]).   That's some nasty weather he had!

Ellen - AF9J

P.S. - Keith, get ready for bizarre weather.  We went from 63 degrees and tornadoes on Monday, to getting 2 inches of snow last night!

Hey Keith,
I have a nice siding break if you need to bend up any aluminum trim.
I'd be glad to bend it up for you.

As of this evening Keith is back on the air. Keith climbed the tower and installed a new pulley at the 110 ft point and I shot a new line over a 80 ft pine. Keith dug up the parts and we built the dipole and put her back up 20 ft higher than the original..YAY! New average height is about 85 ft.  STRAP!

On the air now 3875 kHz!! Grin

The extra height on that antenna sure makes Keith quite strapping.

Yup. a mess alright. Now starts the contractor/insurance debate. There is always something. But hey, We tarped the roof and put up the antenna. What else is important! Priorities!

Might want to throw a couple sheets of plywood over the holes in case it snows hard. As you insurance will come through when hell freezes over. no sense letting water get into the attic.

The insurance company asked me to consider one of their "approved" contractors. I said sure, send them over. They came by and removed the tarps, took some pictures, and insisted that I sign a document authorizing direct payments to them. The boss tells me "This is how it works, we send the estimate to the insurance company, they approve it, we come over and do the repairs". I thought about that overnight & the thought came to me "Who does this guy think he's talking to? I didn't just fall off the turnip wagon". I sent a note to the insurance company and insisted that I be in the loop. I told him I was sick of dealing with contractors that pad estimates and raise the cost of insurance for all of us. I know that's weird to some people but I hate bandits. The contractor than calls me and asks me if we have a "Trust Issue". I met this gut last Thursday and never heard of him before that. He's in for a little surprise. My family has a branch that does this kind of work. I'll run all of the numbers past them and give them the option to repair their own construction before I just pass it to some jamokes I never heard of.
That's my rant for the day.

most contractors are either hacks or think they need "this old house"
pay. I agree and was very lucky to get good ones when I built my place. I work with a guy who wants to add an addition on his place.
He got this yuppie hack in who wants 65K .....I'm into a whole house for that so far and another $25 K and it will look like a palace.

Who do the contractors work for???  Not you....   Insist???

I think you'r much to conservative r/e your rant... i'd be a lot more on fire over this one. "They" try this shyte with auto repair.....   get three or more estimates and consider. My fambly  has been in the trades and has seen a lot of crap over the years.....  arrlggh!            klc

This way they can't put flake board on the roof and use 5 year shingles with 2 nails in each one.

Keith:

Just saw the post.

Wow!! Looks like Katrina!

I hope your repairs go well and insurance takes care of it all.

Good Luck!

The insurance company asked me to consider one of their "approved" contractors.

Same thing in the auto biz, "Approved Repair Facility".
You've got to ask yourself who are these people working for if they have been "approved" by the insurance company, you or the company?
Whose best interests do they have heart, you or keeping the "approved" label and saving the insurance mafia some money?

In my experience, most of the "approved" companies are set in a production format, "pump 'em and pump 'em out".
I want a craftsman working on my car/houseboat, who cares more about me than an "approved" label.

You've got the right idea Keith, you need to be in the loop, its your house.
Find someone YOU "approve" and use them.

The key legal term is to be "made whole", or "pre-loss condition", don't settle for anything less.

Just play the record backwards and everything comes out OK.
