:-*After picking up the Gates BC1-J in Louisiana in September & making the conversion to 75 meters.  I got tired of chasing intermittents thru the darn thing.
It was never one thing in particular, but always two or more things going wrong at once and you could never depend on the bias to work. So I have now completely disassembled the beast and am in the process of rebuilding  it. Modifications to include cutting the cabinet down to a 19" width and  rewelding, forming new aluminum chassis for the mod deck and rf deck, putting all the iron into the bottom of  the cabinet and getting rid of alot of the control circuitry.  Should have it finished and back on the air in the not too distant future.  Atleast, all the shorts and intermittents should be gone.
