Hello Group, well got a new GK400B, (always wanted one of these) and trying to get her cleaned up and see what I need. Is there a good replacement tube for the V-70-D Triode (reason: something less rare) that I could use with the GK400B..I know its a low Mu tube but dont know if it requires different bias voltages...or I am better off just keeping it stock and keep looking for the tubes?  Thought I'd ask the Gurus..thanks

Ahhhh the curse of the Glob Queen!

Those V-70Ds are strapping toobs indeed but somewhat hard to find.  If they crap out you can replace 'em with 812Hs or even 811s if you change the filament tranny.

Next, try finding a set of 5514 mudulator toobs  Grin  Again 811s will work if you change the fil tranny.  Never tried either mod, but looking at the books the specs are close enough.

I have a Glob(e) 400 here that has been converted to 811-a tubes.....There is a dropping resistor on the filament transformer to lower the voltage .......working well...  Good luck   Steve

OH NO.... I did get this dirt cheap too....Globe Queen eh.?  I also have an RF deck/HV supply from a GK500A, no mod, that I was hoping to switch out from time to time....but first thing is first, get the 400B on the air!   Didnt think of 5514's, no changes necessary in filament voltage, should be plug N play shouldnt it?   But its a high mu tube ....I think the V-70-D is a low mu tube...

I think the fil voltage on the 5514s are different than 811s as well, but I think they're pretty much identical in most important respects.

812s or 812Hs would be a better choice than 811s for the V70Ds but I don't see any reason 811s won't work.  This is class C RF we're talkin here, not class AB2 audio  Grin

812H's are 812s with graphite plates. Nice strapping triodes.

Try finding 8005s!!  It took me a couple years to find some spares for my old buzzard black krackle HB rig. I stayed with the 8005s to try to retain with as much of he personality of the original builder.

812H's are identical to V70D's, except they have a 6.3 volt filament. They are very strapping. I've used a pair in a rig the Derb built and was able to get upwards of 500 watts out of them (dead carrier, no modulation). They loafed along at 300 watts out on AM.
