Wouldn't it be cool to be able to "borrow" that antenna for a few hours on a cold Russian winter night.

We discussed this not too long ago, I was hoping someone might have found a sound file by now. Cool photos, though. As annoying as it was to hear (especially in mid-QSO), it's a part of the past for many of us. It would be good to have a sample for the newbs to hear who never had to suffer through it. And then there's the Cold War nostalgia too...

With Putin returning the bomber patrol, maybe they will crank it up again for all to hear.

Here is a site where you can listen to an audio clip of the Wood Pecker.

There is a link at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for posting the link, I've wanted to hear it directly.
What format is the audio file in, my Mac does not recognize "ogg".

Tnx Fred, guess I need to download some new software for the old Mac.
Appears that ogg is some sort of new compression scheme.

Ogg Vorbis files can be played on a Mac with

Amadeus II
http://www.hairersoft.com/Amadeus.html

Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audion 3
http://www.panic.com/audion/

Harmony Assistant
http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/harmony.htm

MacAmp Lite
http://www.bigblueamoeba.com/~pxr/pub/

Mint Audio

Ogg Drop
It also contains a QuickTime component that allows Quicktime Player and iTunes to play ogg vorbis files.
http://www.nouturn.com/oggdrop/index.php

Ogg Quicktime Components
Ogg plug-in for Quicktime

Ogg is the container or file format, Vorbis is the codec. Other codecs can be used with the Ogg container. Ogg has been around since at least 2003.

I listened to the .ogg file of th woodpecker.  It brought back memories - of having QSOs trashed in the mid & late 80s on 20m by that stupid thing.  It even happened once in a while on 40, but I mainly remember it on 20.  Once it got going - forget it!, you were sunk. Remember all of the QRM fighting devices that were also marketed as being effective against the woodpecker?

I remember the woodpecker very well...and before that... the buzzsaw jammer that some thought sounded like an airplane.  It was very strong and was used, I believe, to jam VOA broadcasts.

Hah, yes! Buddly mentioned this a while back, I thought the same thing as a kid. Sounded like a P2V wound up tight. The woodpecker file at that link doesn't sound like the one I remember, though. The one I recall was more staccato and sometimes paused, then started up again, moved up or down the band, and so on. It also seemed a bit slower. An aging memory, no doubt.

The woodpecker, though not as annoying as Baxtard, would really get your attention when it landed on your frequency: especially if you had the headset on, volume cranked, trying to pull out a weak signal. I clearly remember cracking my noggin on the sloping room beams in my old bedroom closet when this happened. Didn't help that I was leaned over the rig at the time, trying to 'will' the signal out of it.

The noise blanker on the R390A was among the most effective on that pulse-type noise. I don't think I have any recordings of it however.

Neat !
Brings back memories, even in SWL mode.  I think the jamming signals were the most sci-fi like... .big brother and all.

And then there's the 160 mtr. band wiped out completely several hundred miles from the coast by Loran.  TG for Loran C and now GPS.

Oh. I don't like WinAmp. It takes over my  media player; I prefer WMP.  Hmmmm....   This will be a quandary.

Who could forget the sound... Only thing clicking there now is a Geiger counter. Isn't that in the Verboten zone due to high radiation?  Google Earth shows it not too far from the smoldering core. I just don't trust my lungs to that sarcophagus. Both serve as mute testimony to "progress". They want to turn it into a wind farm now. Seems like "green power" might be an easy sell to the locals, since there are only a hand full left.
But it would be fun to tie into that array!  Any idea what the ERP was on that beast? It probably took a big chunk of nuke just to fire it up. There must be a pile of Toobs in boxes just waiting for Democracy.

Ed, try this link. It's for downloading a plug-in that Microsoft came up with to play .ogg files in WIndow Media Player:
