Hello all,,

First thanks for all the help on the hunter bandit. Now I ran into a person here in Az and he said he had built a Big Gun,as the ham folks called it, and said he would be interested in selling it. Its set up for am, has 3x813 tubes, weighs about 125-140 lbs,  he told me that my johnson viking would be a great driver and it should do 3000w, with no problems. I have included a pic of the unit. Just wanted some feedback from you guys that have more knowledge than I do. Im trying to learn as much as I can,  Huh Huh

Thanks for any help

Mac

I don't think 3 813s in class AB linear will handle that kind of power. Plate modulated class c 3 tubes could do about 750 carrier.
450 watts of dissipation I would limit my output power to a KW or so peak unless you blow a lot of air past them and run lots of volts on the plates.

Three 3-500Zs would be working to do about 2.5KW PEP output.  But an 813 is a little more than 1/3 of a 3-500Z.  I wouldn't expect more than 1000W PEP output from three 813s without cooking them.  Still not bad power-wise.

Nice looking rig.

You know you're driving them hard when the cabinet and the front panel meters are glowing too.

I'd say maybe 3KW PEP running slopbucket but not AM in class AB as GFZ stated. Like with other 1KW rigs, don't expect much in the way of power gain. I would change it to class C and build a modulator and probably get about 750~800W AM. Now that would be a big gun!

Looks nice and clean, so if the price is right, it would make a nice little amp. As far as it being a "Big Gun", you would probably have to find room in there for maybe 5 more 813's before you got it to 3kW, but it looks like it was done real nice.

Maybe he ment to say 'Bird' watts.
