I have finally had time to dig into my R-388.  I bought it some time ago, i hope it will be my first functional receiver in my elusive AM station.

I have completed the alignment, which went ok.  There were some minor issues but they were resolved.

Now the problem:
I can tune around on the 4mc band and get the receiver to go dead (no hiss) at discrete points.  It will sometimes also squeal at these points.  The S meter will have a large deflection.  Banging on the chassis will either fix the problem or cause the problem to shift in frequency.  The same will occur if I put a tool into the IF cans and prod the slugs, not turn them, just flex them ever so slightly.  It seems any perturbation will alter the result.
I am not sure this is the only band it occurs on, so far it is....  I have been able to enjoy the QSOs on 3870 here in the NW, just have to whack the chassis a bit.  ;-)  I hope to join in one of these days.........

Perhaps this rings a bell with someone?

Next time it happens gently rock the BFO switch to see if it is possibly the culprit.

I'll give it a try, do you think it is the switch itself?

Tightening all the screws erased the issue.  Love an easy fix....

Congratulations, Rich.  Bask in the glory of it, they don't come along often! Grin
