We have this very large bird hanging around. Last week it stopped traffic a few streets away as it snatched a very large dead varmit off the side of the road and flew off with it. XYL told me it was almost as big as the bird's body. I just saw it fly by. Must have at least 6 foot of wing span. Tan to light brown color wings.
I don't see any red. Not an owl.

Hmmmm, almost sounds like  Red Tailed Hawk.  We have tons of them around here.

Hmmm, yeah, it could be a Turkey Vulture (also have a fair amount of those around here - it's neat watching them soar on a hot summer day).

Frank, your description sounds like it certainly is a turkey vulture.  We have our share around here.

I know what a turkey vulture looks like we have a bunch around the farms near by
too light color.
It looked too big for a red tail that was what I first thought. I just came from my Sister's who is into birds and we looked at her book. We figure it is a young Eagle or Marsh Hawk. It could be a Red Tail but a very big one.
I notice all the crows are gone and we had some big ones. The little birds freak when this thing is around.
I bet it could haul off a large cat.
I hope it doesn't mess with the blue herrin or the ducks behind the house down by the stream.
