HQ-170A Question

One of the fellows that I have QSO's with here in the Pacific Northwest didn't have his antenna switches correct and too much RF got into his HQ-170A. Seems the only part damaged was the 80 meter antenna coil, part #38927-1.

Can these be rewound? Anyone have the expertise, or maybe some spare parts in the junkbox?

I'd like to help the oldtimer.

Hoop go over to the Hallicrafter's list on QTH and post there if noting turns up here.  Also post on the Boatanchor's and AM Radio list.  Lots of good people don't look here that are there.

Probably hopping over to the Hammarlund reflector list would help too. Parts rigs are always turning up. The part in question is common to all HQ-170 type receivers.

For the future, tell him to put a 7.5W lamp (Xmas type or night light type) in series with his receiver terminal antenna lead. Cold resistance has no effect on reception.  If RF gets on the lead, the bulb will light increasing resistance and protect the input coil unless you pump several hundred watts into it and then you burn it out like a fuse.
