Guys:
As I drive around I remember and laugh about what George said about YL drivers...
One day I was driving home on a road I have driven thousands of times. There was a entry lane to the right that has a yield sign. A YL in an SUV is entering the road as I am going by the entrance. I am there and assume she will yield. She does not. I have to slam on my brakes and I look right at her through herdriver's side windor. She is talking on her cell phone and does not even notice me. I was forced to let her go.
I thought of George and laughed.

Hi all:
I am writing a small article on George for Electric Radio.
Does anyone mind if I use the comments here in the article?
Thanks Dan W1DAN

Looking forward to seeing that, Dan.
I hope you can put your hands on that photo of George, shirtless and studley with his pencil mustache in the 1950s on some sort of expedition.
It was in a magazine somewhere.

Carl:
I have probably between 300mb and 1 gig og stuff. Hoping I can get a section for him here on Amfone.net. Thanks though!
Here is W1GAC. He was an Expert Marksman. This was probably taken somewhere between 1954 and 1970...dunno.

Awesome photo. Any dude that shoots wearing a cardigan and smoking a pipe it too cool. George was a hip fella backing the day. I hope you can put your hands on that photo of George, shirtless and studley with his pencil mustache in the 1950s on some sort of expedition.
It was in a magazine somewhere. That was in QST in the 50's, IIRC. I'll see if I can find it. It was when George was "down range" somewhere in the Carribean. Yep, all tanned and looking good, would have put George Hamilton IV to shame!

Hi all:
Here he is as VP5GM on the Grand Turk Island around 1959. This appeared in the August 1959 "Florida Skip" newsletter.

seriously, thats a too kewl pic. the HB TX's were called the Mighty Mite's I think? 1954 QST? He made one then improved on it.

The best gun picture I have is the time my brother and I parked our Firebirds on the front lawn. (offense #1) and then we stood my little sister in front of them holding my Dad's shot gun (offense #2). We waited about 20 years to show the OM.

It's true. When-I-wuzza-kid, hams were kool dudes - they drove Jag XKE's, smoked pipes while hitting bulls-eyes with a .38, worked for NASA, etc. Such a contrast with today...

Guys:
The rig he made for QST was the Mighty Mo (Junior 1951 and Senior 1954). I have them. Have the 1954 article, but not the 1951 issue.
What issue of QST was the VP5GM photo in?

that picture of O.B. George shootin' while smoking his pipe reminded me of my father, who used to do about the same, but without the nice duds. i have picture of Dad shooting a .38 6" barrel Colt Da while smoking his pipe. damn that guy could shoot! my brother and i would toss beer cans in the air from different directions and he'd nail them all from about 10-20 yards single handed (the two hand hold was for panzies back then). one time he dared us and we tossed a Kennedy half Dollar up at about 10 yards and he hit it. what da F? i can't do that with a rifle! i knew George well, and remember him as a mentor, but never knew he was a shooter except from his military service. he was truly a Great American!

George was indeed a very cool cat, right to the end. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him. Dan kindly sent along a couple of artifacts for me to remember him by. Thanks again http://www.amforever.net/bin/hams/w1gac/w1gac1.html
