I picked up this interesting low power homebrew TX at the museum in Windsor, CT. The tube lineup is a 6T9 modulated by a 6BQ5 with 12AX7. It has a built-in TR switch and power supply, it looks like it works AM only on 160 and 80 by looking at the crystals, though it may do 40. Bandswitching seems to be done with an alligator clip. I don't have a 6T9 for it yet but might have one in one of the glass bins. There are stickers for functions and stickers for W2KTU who may have built it as well as a date of November 23, 1972. I don't know or remember a W2TKU, but someone does have the call now though I am guessing that he is not the original call holder. Maybe this was built from an article from a magazine or handbook?Huh? Anybody have an idea? I would like to get this thing working!
Thanks.......Larry

Trace out the circuitry and make a schematic.

While it may have been from an inspiration from article it does NOT mean it is a copy.

Having your own schematic of your own transmitter (as built) is priceless.

Larry,

The W2KTU I remember from approx. 1985 to 2000 was Ed from Long Island. He had a good signal on 160 and 75. He was before my time as far as being able to do anything other than hear the guy. I'm guessing he's been SK maybe 15-20 years.

I live in central PA about 25 miles SE of State College. It's a fairly decent haul to LI and this guy would come through well in the daylight hours on 75. Think he may have been part of the Gray Hair Net at one time. An old net roster might confirm on dispel my recollection.

Not sure if this was the transmitter I used to hear as judging from the W2KTU/1 and W2KTU/2 Dymo labels affixed,  it may have been built for portable operations in the 1st and 2nd call districts. The large format version of Understanding Amateur Radio (ARRL 1977) has a 6T9 Novice CW transmitter featured on pp. 145-146. The W2KTU rig looks a whole lot nicer.

The late 60's early 70's Handbook has a 6T9 transmitter for 160.
If you can't find a copy I may be able to dig it up

Thanks for the comments. I will search the handbooks that I can get my hands on from that time, or just trace it out. a 6T9 is on its way via Ebay.

Hi Larry, It is on page 193 of the 1969 HB.
However that one uses 2- 6T9s, one as an osc/PA and a 12AT7 as a speech amp with a second 6T9 as a speech amp  and a SE modulator.
If you want that I will scan it for you

Here is a rough scan of the schematic. Not much to the article. If you need help on any one item let me know

Nice, thanks! Not the same but some things are close. This one was designed for CW and AM, mine is AM only. I wonder why the one in the article is 160M only. Circuit tracing time soon. 6T9 has not arrived yet.....Larry
