40 meters for night owls

April 2nd and early  April 3rd ...Sunday Night/Monday Morning

7.295 Mc AM was well represented.  Signals were very good starting from around 09:00 pm Central into early morning near 3 am.  

So good in fact, that Brandon K5IIA and myself John KX5JT, at 11 pm and only 150 miles apart had a pipeline with 30 db + over s9 for a couple of hours.  We also were able to copy several stations around including Jack K9ACT near Chicago, Gas Man K9GAS and Robert W0VMC and several others.  It was quite interesting to be able to copy stations both near and far.

Great stuff, John. Thanks for posting it. Very encouraging. I've listened in a number of times to 40m evening activity but during the cold winter months it wasn't practical to be out in the unheated garage station. Hoping to get some evening radio time over the next few weeks before static season kicks into high gear.

Nice to see Deano/KNX in there! Mr Klee-N-X was a landmark station in the northeast for years with his solid signal. Especially when he kept the branches trimmed off the wires with his famous technique.

Yep, Deano has been a regular on 75 meter AM all winter after midnight his time (more like 3 am central).  He is running a 3 element vertical array pointed towards his "home" territory in the North East.   We all decided to check 40 after some messing about on 75 early that morning and it proved to be much better for Arizona/Louisiana/Maine to all talk to each other since the "sea level" dropped (noise floor) on that band.

How do you guys do 40 at night?  I've got wall to wall arabic and chinese stations starting around 1700 local and going pretty much all night.

They sign on, they sign off.. we slip in between, go down lower.. whatever it takes.   Sure we hear the broadcasts but they do not cover the dial every 5 Khz.
