Vintage or AM at Field Day

I know Electric Radio has sponsored a "Vintage Field Day" with very limited participation for a number of years.  Seems like it would be a really good idea to incorporate a "vintage" AM station along with the traditional ARRL Field Day operations.  Most likely its a little late at this point to suggest such a thing this year, since field day is this weekend.  It seems, however, that it would be a very good way to get the message out to the mainstream ham population and do a little promoting of AM and classic radio by including it our field day operations.  Heck, not just "vintage" but AM period!  Take those class E rigs out there too!  Maybe the ARRL could even be persuaded to add it as a separate class or a "freebie" station to earn points.

Maybe, I'll even figure out a way to take a small AM rig out to field day with me this year just to show everybody what its all about.  What do you think???

I am surprised that Pete/CWA has not jumped on this idea, since the League's event clearly provides a special benefit for the use of AM.

I guess I will do his job for him and promote a League event:

7.3.10. Non-Traditional Mode Demonstrations: A maximum of 300 bonus points (100 points for each demonstration up to three) for setting up a demonstration of a non-traditional mode of amateur radio communications. This includes modes such as APRS, ATV, and SSTV. Available to Classes A, B, and F.

I suppose it applies to AM as a speciality mode, but I wouldn't include AM amongst the "non-traditional" modes.  From reading the statement, I'm not sure exactly what they mean by "non-traditional."

I guess in this context, they mean traditionally used for Field Day comms. AM most certainly was in it's hey day. Dunno about SSTV and the like.

AM is not a "specialty" mode, a "non - traditional" mode, angel music, heritage mode, legacy mode etc.
AM is "Another Mode" -- that stands on equal status with SSB, CW, RTTY etc.

You got that one exactly right, Mark.  And Kathy Allison hit the nail right on the head too.  Just get on there and use it, and let's not be asking for extra points.  Traditional Hams do it all for free Grin

Ok then, so who is planning on operating AM during Field Day?
It would be interesting to establish a "beach head" on 3885 and see what happens!

Heck, I might even drag the T-368 out for this one!

I think all the "CQ FIELD DAY"ers wore out the band.  It was in piss-poor shape this afternoon.

I was thinking of reviving WA3UAN and putting on an endless tape loop of CQ Field Day for the weekend, but nah.

Hi:

I brought a Ranher and HRO-5 to FD last year. Got some good attention from club members who have not seen Vintage Radio in action.
