The Hotel California album cover Eagles' 1976 album "Hotel California" has sold more than 16 million copies, spawned a best-record Grammy, and is regarded by numerous rock critics as one of the best albums ever. Its title track, the haunting "Hotel California" continues to entrance listeners even though during its heydey the song was on the charts for only nineteen weeks and in the number one spot for only one.

Because its lyrics contain an ominous undercurrent, many have appeased their sense of disquiet by finding in the words literal and figurative meanings that just aren't there. Theories abound as to what the song means.

If you really want to hear the 'hidden' lyrics you have to play it backwards!

I new about the satinism, but I never dreamed about the  canabilism. I thought it was confined to the Royal Navy, not that there is a lot of it there....    klc

Interesting posting Don.
Evil is very real, but there is enough OVERT evil in the worked without having to look for it hidden in every corner.
I'm a believer, but if these folks spent 1/2 the time confronting real Evil rather than ferreting out every questionable line and verse, folks would take them seriously.

Please, a little common sense here.
With Iran arming with nuclear weapons, the threat of Islamic terrorists against the civilized world, suicide and drug abuse rampant among teenagers, rock music from the 70s is the last thing we need to worry about.

Just thank God they don’t listen to 75 meters!  Roll Eyes

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a 'religous zealot' when I was working at NASA. She was very intent that all rock and roll music was satanic. It could be proved by playing the songs backwards. At that time, I was returning to the fold of the Faith but couldn't help being drawn into the debate. I said, "What about the Doobie Bros, 'Jesus is Just Alright' and ZZ Topp, 'Jesus Just Left Chicago', and Eric Greenbaum(?) 'Spirit in the Sky'? Satan and all evil, wasn't going to make it so you have to FIND it. Its going right to the core. Its going to shake your Faith!" She sort of dismissed what I was saying. That is when I pointed out that at that time, the Jim & Tammy Faye Baker thing was going on. I said, "This is how satan works!"
I won't say anymore lest I get confined to the AM Inquirer.

Next time you speak to Joe Walsh, ask him about HOTEL CALIFORNIA.. For a very eye opening view into the nature of humans, including cannibalism, read "Flyboys" by James Bradley...

Don Henley: "We were all middle-class kids from the Midwest.
Hotel California was our interpretation of the high life in
Los Angeles.

"Colitas," in the line "Warm smell of colitas," is often
interpreted as a flower or a sexual reference. It is a Spanish
word translated to Henley by The Eagles Mexican-American
road manager meaning "Little Buds," and is a reference to
marijuana.

The line "They stab it with their steely knives but they
just can't kill the beast" is a reference to Steely Dan. They
shared the same manager and had a friendly rivalry. The year
before, Steely Dan included the line "Turn up The Eagles, the
neighbors are listening" on the song "Everything You Did."

The hotel on the album cover is the Beverly Hills Hotel,
known as the Pink Palace. It is often frequented by Hollywood
stars. The photo was taken by photographers David Alexander
and John Kosh, who sat in a cherry-picker about 60 feet above
Sunset Boulevard to get the shot of the hotel at sunset from
above the trees.

Although it is well known that Hotel California is actually
a metaphor, there are several strange internet theories and
urban legends about the "real" Hotel California. Some include
suggestions that it was an old church taken over by devil
worshippers, a psychiatric hospital, an inn run by cannibals
or Aleister Crowley's mansion in Scotland. The Beverly Hilton
can be what ever you want it to be I guess.

. . . . Or . . it was a song about LA from the perspective of
a successful and becoming more so every day group that might
have felt a little wrapped up in their work . . a snapshot of life
as they were observing it at the time . . . eg. Life in the fast
lane . . .

No, you must be confused. If you believe Churchill, Royal Navy tradition was based on "Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash."

I love the misspellings and misstatements in that "Christian" webpage.

They don't do much to make themselves seem reputable, do they?

Speaking of Dolly Parton, here is a photo of her in late '74 or early '75 with 13 year old WN2ZDY.  My mother had the pleasure of knowing Dolly Parton personally and this photo was taken backstage at "The Felt Forum," now called "Theater in the Round" at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  As you can tell by the look on my face, I was too young to appreciate my situation.
