CQ CQ CONTEST

WWW
« on: January 20, 2006, 07:20:43 PM »

From the ARRL Web site:
ARRL First Vice President Joel Harrison, W5ZN, of Judsonia, Arkansas, will be the League's president for the next two years. He'll succeed Jim Haynie, W5JBP, who chose not to run for a fourth term in the uncompensated, volunteer post. Gathering in Windsor, Connecticut, for its annual meeting, the Board voted 10 to 5 to choose Harrison over ARRL Central Division Director Dick Isely, W9GIG, the only other nominee.

ARRL Board also elected Vice President Kay Craigie, N3KN, as First Vice President, succeeding Harrison, and Delta Division Director Rick Roderick, K5UR, to Vice President, succeeding Craigie. Both were unopposed.

The Board re-elected ARRL CEO and Executive Vice President David Sumner, K1ZZ, COO Harold Kramer, WJ1B, Chief Development Officer Mary Hobart, K1MMH, Chief Financial Officer Barry Shelley, N1VXY, Treasurer Jim McCobb, K1LU, Chief Technology Officer Paul Rinaldo, W4RI, and International Affairs Vice President Rod Stafford, W6ROD.

"and International Affairs Vice President Rod Stafford, W6ROD."

Now we know who to call, when foreign affairs need a stiff rodding in the Twilight Zone.

I'm sorry to see they renewed the contracts for Sumner and Rinaldo.

Sumner should have pensioned-out this time, they'll probably hold him responsible as the FCC spanks the League again.

Rinaldo saw to it AM was purged from the Handbook in the early 1980s, just as we were "catching on" again.

He's still at it, lobbying in Washington, and his fingerprints are all over the lovefest the Newington group is having with "digital."

Real "interesting",--Haynie was one of the few that you could at least talk with,
even though one might not agree with him.
Seems like they  really are looking for those of "like mind" to bring ham radio
into the 21st century.
Politics maybe?--Naw.

Rene,
Jim Haynie gave the impression he was listening to you, when all he acknowledged was that he heard you. Big difference. He was as slippery as a car dealer or real estate agent, name your favorite, and regularly misled callers such as yourself who tried to engage him in a dialogue.

At one point, while he was still occasionally showing up to take part in QRZ.com threads involving outrage and dissent against the League for its behavior, I got fed up with his non-answers and answers to questions that weren't asked, and I called upon him to consider resigning in favor of someone who could directly address the problems that were respectfully presented to him.

He replied and said he would consider my request.

I took it as sarcasm, even though I went on to quote him a few times that "he said he would consider my request to quit," yet, within months, word started leaking out that Harrison was in line, being groomed as the successor.

I can't and won't take credit for pushing Haynie out the door, no, that's something only the Back Room Boys will have been able to do. But I do know that there are some very pissed off people, members and non-members alike, who looked for leadership from the un-elected President of the League, and did not find it.

Harrison, he's an unknown quantity here.  The fact they renewed the employment of the highest-paid staffers who remain his practical boss speaks volumes as to whether they've really cleaned house or set us up to just, as The Who once put it --

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

What gags me in all of this Paul, is why does the (be)Legue(d) need two presidents? There is a wise saying that goes, "a man cannot serve two masters". The same rings true of an organization be it radio or the old woman's knitting society. The ARRgghhL is also evolving into a situation where the are too many chiefs and not enough Indians, (I mean no disrespect to our Native Americans). Eventually, like a burnt out star, it will collapse in amoungst itself.

Paul,--VJB,

But are they not all like "car salesmen" or "politicians"?
Their main priority is "making a buck", by selling a car,--by over-exaggerting
the product, and the same hold true in this instance,--its all about "selling"
the "new high tech" radio`s, and vintage radio IS NOT high on their list,
IMO.

I do not have a "good feeling" about where this "new" president is going
to "lead the ship", as far as vintage, or legacy modes.

I am really uncomfortable with this so called "AM exemption", if you know
what I mean.
These guys are really showing their "true colors" IMO.

Anyone want to get a good scandal going to let old Harrison know we are watching him ?

Looks like his "Harrison Radio Club" might be questionable.
He happens to have the minimum four licensed members, all of whom are immediate family members.

This isn't the intent of the FCC's club call sign system.

There is no website, no roster of members, no newsletter, and no other sign anywhere on the internet that this is what would normally be considered a club.

Here's what I pulled up, based on looking at his profile on QRZ.com and then his old Novice call sign that he retains in protective custody as a club call.

http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/club/detail.html?master_id=1000060138
Name: Joel M Harrison
Call Sign: W5ZN
Address: 528 Miller Rd
Total number of club members: 10
Number of voting members: 10
Number of voting members who are licensed amateurs: 10
Number of voting members who are ARRL members: 10

City: Judsonia State: AR
ZIP Code: 72081-9208

Phone (Day): (501) 729-5227
Phone (Day): (501) 268-9262 (Eve): (501) 729-3301

You know, when it comes to the League's interest in disqualifying certain candidates for perceived ethics problems, or precluding someone because of a RISK of possible ethics problems, we might have a case here.

Ya know Pete,--there is one nice thing about being/or becoming an "old buzzard",
--its kinda like "old dogs" and "kids", these "resumes" no longer impress many of
us, we`re  into ham radio for the "fun" of it,--not impress anyone with all
these paper awards.

We just like building, and/or restoring vintage stuff, and makiing new friends,
and could "care less" about impressing anyone.

At the rate ham radio is going,--I will probably get serious about horses
and join my daughter in her favorite hobby.
