I was recently given a beautiful, unmolested HQ-180.  A friend owned it for the past 25 years but he didn’t have any previous history.
The manual that has been with it since 1968 (another owner wrote and dated a note) does not have a schematic that seems to match thr radio. The manual doesn’t have a rev or date.

This HQ-180 has component date codes from late 1962.  Were there manual or schematics that had dates and ECN notes? It would be best if I can figure out which documentation goes with this particular rig.

Is it a 180 or a 180 a? Solid-state rectifier in the power supply vacuum tube?

Hi Tom,

I have a pdf of what I believe would be the latest manual for the 180 and I'd be glad to forward a copy if you PM me your email address.

It's my understanding that the last advertising for the plain (not A or XE) was in January of 1962, so that would mean yours must have been one of the last produced before they switched to the A and XE.

This manual covers all three versions.

They are excellent receivers IMHO and mine is probably my favorite even if it has very obviously had a rough life.

There were at least 3 or 4 iterations of the HQ-180 Series of manuals plus several addendums issued.
Through the 60's as costs became important, part changes and/or circuitry changes initiated by the  product manager were often brought to the manufacturing floor to be implemented, but updates to the printed manual were often never done.

Let me also point out that initially, when introduced, there were separate manuals for the HQ-180, HQ-180A, etc. It was later that they came out with the "HQ-180 Series" which included the HQ-180, HQ-180A, HQ-180AX, and the HQ-180XE.
The first "Series" manual is the one shown in the previous post with Part # 52787-1.

The last "Series" manual, I believe, was generated in ~1968/69 when Hammarlund was now owned by EAC. Part # of the manual I have is 9001-06-00001 Issue 3. A 2 page addendum was also issued for this manual.

Finding the 100% correct documentation for your receiver probably would be very difficult. Even the manual that was included in the box with the receiver may not have had a 100% schematic that agreed with the physical receiver. When initially purchased and for some time thereafter, the customer was more interested in features and performance rather then a dissection analysis between receiver circuitry and schematic. 50 to 60 years later, that scenario may sometimes be flipped around  Smiley.

Thank you for the comments.  My HQ180 does seem to be a late run.  Some crystals are stamped 8-62 and the GE tubes are coded the 3rd or 4th quarter 1962. The electrolytic can is dated 24062-44.  Serial is 4758.
The “original” manual I have is issue #2 starting serial 650.  Its from Hammarlund 1 N.Y.
A copy of another is issue #4 starting serial 1335. It’s Hammarlund a Giannini Scientific co. Ny 16 NY
Another is a recent reprint of “the series” HQ 180 / HQ180A issue 2 reprint January 1968 with addenda for clock, XE, A, AX, parts lists.

Are the handful of Dur-paper capacitors problematic in these sets?

The individual manuals Hq-180 and HQ-180A had roughly about 20 pages in them. Basically the operating manual. The "HQ-180 Series" manual had roughly 72 pages and had lots more technical theory, mechanical disassembly of panels, dials, etc., voltage charts, resistance charts, etc. Hammarlund never created a dedicated service manual for this receiver nor did they for the rest of their receivers.
