Red part turned in for a refund.

« on: December 19, 2016, 08:52:51 PM »

I got this unmodified DX-60A off eBay.  It was unmodified until it got to my hands.  It looks like the builder did a really good job.

I replaced all the electrolytics and put a 3-prong cord on it.  I also changed out all the rectifier diodes with beefier ones and replaced the 120 vac bypass caps.  The chassis is blank enough in the middle for a fuse holder.  I got rid of Heathkit's "breaker" they stick in line with the AC line. They used such hair-thin wire to supply all the power to the radio.

I'm not going to do any audio mods on this since I'm only using this for CW.

It's going to be a nice addition to the shack.  Years from now, I can show my kids how to tune a tube transmitter.

...and it sucks to be crystal controlled in the lonely portion of the band.

The DX-60 does have a VFO input, and I could drive it with my second DDS VFO, but I'm reserving that for my new 40 meter class E rig (2 fetter).  And, I'm really out of desk space to add a 3rd VFO.

That's ok.  I just searched eBay to fill up the other 3 crystal sockets.  Heathkit was really thinking when they added that crystal switch.

That's a beauty Jon! I had a really clean HW-16 that I loved to use on CW about 30 years ago. It was so easy to pack in the car when we went to the family cabin which was about a mile into the woods up in NE Connecticut. My kids were always amazed that I could translate CW into text on a pad of paper for them. You'll definitely be a hero to your kids when you show them how to peak the grid and dip the plate!

Thanks Rob. I was lucky enough as a young teenager to have elmers show me how tube gear works. I'll be able to do the same for my kids, and show them the art of CW.

I'll also be able to show them how to build solid state stuff. Hopefully they'll do something with it, or it benefits them somehow. If nothing else, they should have some fond memories.
