I got to thinking about the father of two girls I went to high school with, he was a short husky man and had what I might best describe as an aura of some one who had been there. He owned the funeral home in the town I was raised, I remember at my father's wake him asking me about my father's WWII service and making the comment, he supported me at D day. Not quite true as my father was in the Mediterranean but I understood what he meant.

It wasn't until he passed on that I found out that he was one of the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc on D Day.

Apparently (understandably) D-Day is becoming passé.  I checked the Grit channel and Get TV channels yesterday and no WWII movies on.    The Grit channel has a WWII weekend every couple of weeks, but no WWII or D-Day movies Sunday.  I went on-line and checked their schedules for Monday and no WWII movies showing.  I would have wanted to see one of them playing The Longest Day.  I don't get cable, only over-the-air, so maybe there was something appropriate playing on some channel I don't get.

My neighbor across the road came ashore on D-Day +1 and then was flown to Italy on D-Day+2; BAR man.   He did a lot of night fighting up through Italy, reaching the northern border about the time the war ended.  He was very lucky, not a scratch but a lot of close calls.
