Making AM GREAT Again!

« on: September 01, 2015, 12:23:15 AM »

Ron Boot told me to tell you all hello,  He's alive and well,  and hopes your all doing well.

Said you would know him by the name.

Also said he misses the QSOs,  just not the same anymore :-)

Was listening to TimTron last night on 7290, 10 over 9 signal, when the audio dropped out and there was just a dead carrier for about 20 minutes before I tuned away. Don't know if that carrier was someone else, his audio just failed, Cheesy or HLR fell asleep at the mic. Darn good signal, though. Grin

R,

You probably experienced the Tronic NiCd effect. It's been known to last for several hours.

Yeah, we miss good old Ron Boot !  He could certainly get a license NOW (or maybe he actually did do this - I forget).

Where is Ron living these days?

So he's still around! Good to hear. Last I heard (maybe as many as 10 years ago) he was living in PA not far from W3DUQ. I think I have some cassette recording of Ron stashed somewhere. Might have to dig those out.  Wink

As I thought about our conversation some more,  thought I'd pass along....

Me,  "Oh,  so you probably know or knew QIX?"

Ron "(he gave your old call),  or you mean,  'clip lead steve'"......

Lol.   You've held that moniker quite some time.....

Yeah, that name has definitely been around since the '70s.

A clip lead cost me a real high fidelity modulation transformer back then - I had a clip lead connecting the mod transformer secondary to the RF amplifier circuitry, and it just plain fell off.  The mod transformer had no load and needless to say, it shorted internally.

Actually, that single experience is what propelled me to building PWM transmitters - no mod transformer!!  At that time there was no way that I could afford another mod transformer, but PWM uses hand-built components (PWM filter inductors) and very inexpensive parts.

But, it WAS the clip lead that caused the problem, and I did tell a lot of people about it at the time  Wink

I miss talking with Ron.  Wish he's get back on.
