I work mainly in the AM mode but occasionally do digital.

I use Fldigi because it works.

I agree that fldigi is probably your best choice and it run on all platforms - Windows, Linux, Mac

Also here is a link that lists some of the top digital programs -

Looks like I am screwed. Had to purchase a new computer that has Windows 8.1. No line input? Just USB microphone. Maybe the Signalink is the only way to go?

Any ideas?

Thanks Terry

Its an Acer. The signalink has its own sound card but an external sound card may be the answer? Maybe I could route the headset output on the back to the mic in and get what I need?

It is usually best to not use the internal (windows) sound card. Let it be for things the computer wants to use it for like windows, and music and video sound.

An external USB sound device  like many of the digital interfaces have is the way to go. You could even use a simple USB sound FOB. They can be had for less than $10. There is also no reason why you can't use a mic input with the proper padding so you don't overload the input stage. When you use an external device you can keep the audio lines near the rig running only the usb to the computer.  A lot less mess.

I use a Microham Digikeyer and I like it a lot. It has all the controls for the external rig including rig control all done on one usb interface.

Some newer rigs like the TS590 have usb sound and rig control built-in. You just connect them via usb to your computer.

When you connect these external sound devices they show up as sound input and output devices under windows. You can also use a program like VAC (virtual audio cable) to connect devices together within the computer.
