It is my considered opinion that many of the newcomers are Technician Class and are primarily interested in VHF/UHF.  Having said that I don't know what bands they operate because I don't hear too many new calls on the two repeaters I tend to frequent.

Many Techs hang out on 10 meters. Around my area, I know of number of Techs who only play with various digital modes on the VHF/UHF bands.
