Could anyone help me with paint for my RANGER ll. I have a great looking JOHNSON RANGER ll, but it could use a touchup on the paint on the lite gray area's. I dont want to purchase a gallon for 5 drops of paint. I am sure someone has done this before and has a good idea on how to prepare the spot and how to paint it correctly.

Thanks John

Hi John,
Well, I thought I would at least respond to you!  I seem to remember that one of the Duplicolors found at automotive stores were available in a close color match.

Matching is tricky depending on how fussy you are.  Its not only the color but the sheen of the finish that makes it blend in properly.

All of the big box stores now will do color scanning for you and mix you up some paint.  In order of finishes, you have flat, satin, semi gloss and gloss.  I would lean towards satin or possible semi gloss as a possible sheen.

I took the easy way out and just had Dee, W4PNT who sadly is now an SK re-do most of my Johnson stuff.  He had all the silkscreens so he could easily do panels as well as cabinets.

John,

E.F. Johnson Radio Restorations by K1TLI, Chuck Hurley is my go too guy for Johnson's. I have a restored Ranger from him and currently have a Valiant II in his shop.

One comment regrading paint matching, I was always of the school that gray was the hardest color to match.

I just painted my NC-300 cabinet.  I went to Home Depot and they matched the Gray
in a Satin acrylic latex.  I bought whats called a Preval Sprayer kit.  Comes with a 6 oz bottle
and a can of compressed air.  Pour your matched paint in the bottle, screw on the can
and now you have a spray paint with your matched color.
The system works but did clog a few times during the process and it
took a total of 4 replacement cans to paint the cabinet inside and out, and both
sides of the top lid.   The complete kit is around $6 with the replacement cans
around $4.
Job came out pretty good.

Ken
