Here are the readings for the VFO on the 2 MHz band, MHz and amount off in KHz

1.5/+3.5
1.6/+3
1.7/+2.5
1.8/+2
1.9/+1
2.0/0
2.1/-1
2.2/-2
2.3/-3
2.4/-4
2.5/-4.5

Not that far out, it seems. I've seen much worse.

Here are the deviations, center of each band, and MHz, and error in KHz

1/+3.5
2/0
3/+3.5
4/0
5/+4.5
6/+1.5
7/+3.5
8/0
9/+4
10/+0.5
11/+4.5
12/+1
13/+6
14/+3
15/+3.5
16/0
17/+3.5
18/0
19/+3.5
20/+2
21/+4
22/+1
23/+3
24/0
25/+5
26/+2
27/+3.5
28/0
29/+3.5
30/+3

Most common deviation is +3.5. It would seem the easiest "fix" would be to slide the KHz dial on the shaft -2 KHz and leave as is. What say you?

Not sure if removing the PTO and adjusting the endpoints is worth the effort unless I can do it without removal from the radio.

Put the R388 back in service. Shifted KHZ dial -2 KC. The fiducial lines up on most amateur bands, so its "good enough".

You have a 9 KHz net error on that PTO.  I'd do the endpoint adjust on it.

You can do it in the radio, but you'll most likely have to pull it to get the little locknut off the endpoint adjust.  And you'll probably have to remove a turn from the endpoint adjust coil.

The 388 is back in its rack, working "well enough" for the moment. I think the Valiant was jealous due to all the attention spent on the 388 and promptly busted itself again.

I'll tackle the endpoints in the future.

Study up on the Valiant, you will be working on it in some fashion while you own it.

Yep. I keep a copy of the manual handy, both electronic and hard copy.
