I have a Meissner signal shifter that seems to have all kinds of spurs below and above the specific oscillating frequency when in VFO mode.  I am not very familiar with this piece of gear and am wondering if this is the norm for these vfo's.  Anyone know how to solve this problem?

Has it been modified?

Is it loaded into your following stage?

I have three of them, none exhibit a spur problem, especially below the op frequency.

Are you looking at it with a spectrum analyzer that may have the front end overloaded?

My first contact ever was a K6 in Redlands, Ca in '57 running a signal shifter barefoot on 40 cw. Great little qrp rig or vfo. And looks Gud.

I was running the Meisner.

Which model - - Deluxe with plug-in coils or EX with the turret?

Corroded sockets and pins or corroded turret contacts can do some weird stuff.

It sounds like your VFO DC stabilizer circuit is squegging (oscillating) at low frequency. Check that the OD3 and OA3 stabilizer tubes are okay by doing a substitution test if you have no other way of doing it. If they're okay, check the two resistors feeding the tubes to see if their values have gone high. Also check out the decoupling capacitors on the OD3 and OA3 tubes to see if they're leaky or way off value.

I use an EX Shifter 160-10M and its clean, took me a few years to find the 160 coil strips. Also have the prewar plug in coil version that was part of the 150B package for the Army.

Its a late 40's design, replace all paper caps, electrolytics and check all resistors for tolerance. You dont have the NBFM modulator engaged I hope??

Replaced all  paper caps this afternoon and found several resistors that had changed to double their stated values.  Seems to have solved the problem.  I will try it out tonight on 160 if anyone else is on the band around 1885 megs. Now works great, problem solved and very stable.

My EX has not been fired up since 1950/51...  Never did find the 160 coils.

The NBFM module was suggested as a cure for TVI as I recollect...

I used mine to drive a screen modulated, clamp tube {6Y6}, single 813
on fone plus CW...   Worked great but was nicknamed the "Signal Drifter".
Still have that final but the audio section is long gone...

Make sure you turn the turrent knob in the correct direction, those contact
springs are unobtanium...

Guess I ought to get that thing out and operational again, either that or
any offers?

Bishop Loughlin HS in Brooklyn NY had an EX Shifter driving a 813 and 811 modulators when I was there in 1954-55 and got my Novice thru the club, W2ZLK. Receiver was a HQ-129X with a Halli SP-44 panadaptor. Antennas were stacked 10-15-20M Telrex on a self supporting tower on the roof with Telrex rotator. The Christian Brothers lived well Grin

I soon had my own HQ-129X and then a Drifter when the General arrived, amazing what 10-12W of VFO could do with simple antennas during Cycle 19. By 57 I had a Viking I, 122 VFO and a HB PP -250TH/810 mod from the MARS program parts hoards.
Carrying a couple of BC-610's (2 trips) in the trunk of a 49 Ford was an interesting exercise Roll Eyes
