Bishop Loughlin HS in Brooklyn NY had an EX Shifter driving a 813 and 811 modulators when I was there in 1954-55 and got my Novice thru the club, W2ZLK. Receiver was a HQ-129X with a Halli SP-44 panadaptor. Antennas were stacked 10-15-20M Telrex on a self supporting tower on the roof with Telrex rotator. The Christian Brothers lived well
I soon had my own HQ-129X and then a Drifter when the General arrived, amazing what 10-12W of VFO could do with simple antennas during Cycle 19. By 57 I had a Viking I, 122 VFO and a HB PP -250TH/810 mod from the MARS program parts hoards.
Carrying a couple of BC-610's (2 trips) in the trunk of a 49 Ford was an interesting exercise
