From "The Pirate Dictonary" by Terry Breverton:

Avast ye!:  Be quiet or stop!  Possibly from the Italian "basta! (enough!) or from the old Dutch words "houd vast" meaning to hold fast.

A very interesting book...although its titled as a pirate dictonary, it is more so a dictionary of naval/nautical terms, and thier origins.  A great read, interesting to see how many phrases we use all the time have nautical origins, such as for starters in the As and Bs alone;

above board
aloof
at loose ends
all in a day's work
bamboozle
barbeque
batten down the hatches
bite the bullet
bitter end
blazer
blood is thicker than water
by and large
by the board
etc etc

I especially liked "to bring one's arse to an anchor", meaning to sit down...
