254W

« on: December 22, 2011, 09:50:36 PM »

OK guys 'n gals,

Here is the RF deck I hope to be using for the heavy metal rally. Parallel 8000's for 160, 75, and 40 meters. 1900V@275mA on the finals. Pi network tank. Plug in grid coils. Just finished her and will be doing some testing tonight and tomorrow. If I can't get her up and running for the heavy metal rally, I still have the 254W RF deck, but that doesn't cover 160. Hope to be on all three bands. See you then!!

Ron W8ACR

Beautiful deck, Ron. I really like 810s and anything that uses them. Wonder if we'll hear it down here in NC some night this winter? The 245W makes the trip just fine from Montana. Conditions lately have been pretty quiet with big signals, though tonight we have static from some T-storms moving north from Alabama and Georgia.

Yup, She's kinda pretty. Nice layout.
And conditions get crapped on by these warm fronts and storms coming from the South. Like a continual Monsoonal movement. Possibly the drenching that Texas needs from the drought.

And 245W is a very nice signal. It's the antenna that does the work.

Hi Ron,

Nothing better than getting a chassis and doing some drilling and blasting to create a piece of Ham gear.

Have fun with the project.

That's very nice looking work! I like the bandswitch. Those were from a 100W military rig IIRC but I've seen them used for many times more with no problem with those huge contacts. One of the best RF switches ever made!

I would imagine parallel 8000's start getting squirrely at 20 meters and above because of interelectrode capacitance. This starts making amplifiers turn into oscillators. I will have to look up the specs on the 8000.Not sure one could neutralize a pair of 8000's on 20. Certainly not 15 and 10.Besides, I have over 150 countries on 10 with 100 watts ssb. On 20, one definitely needs an amp. I have a friend who ruled the roost in north AL on 20m with a pair of 833A's.

FWIW<

The 14 Ed. of the west coast h'dbk has a Push/Pull 1KW amp using a plethora of tubes -  810, 8000, 806 or 250TH' s. "They" note that 8000s perform "well" on 10m. The 810s are not recomended; 806 and 250THs are prefered.

I've got (2) 810s and (2) 8000s.......  I'm wondering if something like the Tesla 300 - 8000s moded by 810s would lite up my shack.....  but  i've got other things to do first.

according to the RCA datasheet for the 8000, they're good to 30 mc with full ratings and 100 mc with reduced ratings. what's the difference between an 810 and an 8000?

Just the mU.  Higher on the 810.

Good deal on the 8000 going to 10m. It may depend on the layout of the circuit.I just sold my 14th edition. I have a 450TL I need to do something with. I figure I can use it on 10, probably on 10m CW to keep the outlaws from "freeband" from taking over. Anyone use 4E27's in parallel? I have two of them also.

Hi Ron,

Looks great!  Very buzzardly.

Heard you on 160 M -- 1925, Kcs last night,  working John,  W6MIT. Signal averaging 20 over S9 on my stingy meter.

Know that  you want to work out a few things,  but sounds very good here in Central-ish CA (yea,  bet this info belongs in the 160  topic ...   but ..)

Wow, I do like that deck!!! Looking forward to working you (did you mean the AM Transmitter Rally, or are you going to use this deck next December during the HMR?).

In any event, real nice.

Regards,

Steve

Hey Terry and Steve,

Thanks for the comments. I got it working well on 160, but no go on 75 or 40. Must have calculated the pi network values wrong. I did have it on the air for the heavy metal rally on Dec 28, but no 160 meter activity at all.  I'm now in the process of a household move to North Dakota, and have not had time to get on the air. Will try to iron out the problems later when my life is not so hectic.

Ron

PS Terry - Did you and I ever have a QSO when I lived in Plattsburgh, NY? I was there from 1991 to 1997, stationed at Plattsburgh AFB. I don't seem to remember your call. At the time I ran a T-368A, and later a BC-610I (T-213). I was frequently on 1915 with N2KSZ(SK), W1CKI, K1DEU, W2GAC, KW1I and many others. I have fond memories of the ham community in the New England area.
