Had a QSO with KD6OS Ralph in OK with appearances by W9AD Dave in IL W6PSS David in Kansas City, Ve8XJ Tim in NWT .N6JW in CA and a couple others...14.286...We carried on for about 2 hours...The signals were not real strong but we all heard each other....started about 0000Z...

Hi Steven, Interesting. I have not been on 20M AM for a few years. Probably have a hundred contacts logged with Ashtabula Bill, also some with W9AD. The recent lack of solar activity cut back on activity on 14.286. Have listened a few times but nothing heard. Seems the Greek net on 14.285 is still active. I run a Globe King 500A with a Drake R4-C receiver much modified by Sherwood Eng. Antenna a 5/8 wave vertical with an extensive radial sytem under it. If you guys have any optimal time for 20M AM activity, I would appreciate a heads up. 73, John, AA5T, Houston, Tx.

Also, call a few CQ's and/or listen about 14.330 or slightly above. There's been some AM activity there. Get's us away from the adjacent QRP frequency of 14.285 and generally is free of lots of SSB.

Thanks, Pete 14330 is a good idea. Always a struggle around 14.286. Right now I don't have a crystal for 14330. I will order one. Any other popular frequencies on 20M AM. John, AA5T

Adjacent frequencies around 14.286 generally are active with lots of SSB. Around 14.330 or above is a nice alternative.

14.286 is awful in Europe. I had a great QSO with Dave WB1EAD tonight on 14.330. 73 John G3YPZ

Hi all..I tend to agree with John G3YPZ..sure I've listened plenty around 14.286..it's too darn crowded..have had several "Q"s with John and others centered around 14.330..sometimes dropping to 14.229 to stay clear of 24/7 activity on 14.332..noticed also when the DLs were not there that 14.440 is also quiet territory..I'm not for straining to hear someone thru the SSB on 14.286..just my two cents worth is all..........73 de DAVE

You don't want to operate on 14.440.

I use a Zero Five ground plane for 40-10. It's been doing great and I've even put out a decent signal with it on 80. It is a compromise but I can load it and work some 80 with it to.. Just worked Dr. John KN4ME an hour ago on 3.885.

Saturday, I had a nice QSO with Bob, w5gqw at Horseshoe Bend Arkansas, after calling CQ on 14330 @ 1930GMT. He told me that it had been a couple of years since he had been on AM, and Bob is quite the active ham since 1957. Goes to show that even though conditions are maybe difficult you may be rewarded with a new friend with your efforts. 20m isn't only for sidebanders.. 73.
