Hi all problem solved it was a shorted cap across the modulation transformer.Thanks for all the help

Steve,

FB, you had the problem correctly, as a shorted cap across the mod xfmr.  I never worked on a Viking 2, so I was just guessing as to the problem.
I figure we now know his kids probably were shouting into the mike.  He's lucky the mod xfmr wasn't damaged.

Don't bother replacing it. Just cut it out and you'll be fine. It's there to roll off the highs.
