Very good conditions on 160 meters last night. Several of us in the eastern states were hearing W7UO from Tucson. AZ (actually only a few miles from the Mexican border) last night at around 10 PM ET. He reached signal strengths are high as 10-15 dB over 9! Too bad we could not make a two way conversation as we did hear him mention that he was hearing some of us. This is a 2000 mile shot to my location.

I got a late start, about 0500 GMT.  Was about to call CQ on 1885, when I heard a moderately strong slopbucket already on frequency calling CQ.  He said he was located in central British Columbia.  A WL7 in Alaska answered him (also on SSB).  I could hear the Alaskan in the background, but couldn't make out anything he said.

I  listened for a while, and when the WL7 signed out, I zero-beated the frequency and called the VE7.  He immediately came back and we had a very enjoyable chat, nearly an hour long.  He said he hadn't operated AM in a long while for two reasons: back problems prevented him from lugging around the heavy equipment so he got rid of his Viking II and BA receiver, and he didn't like the huge old buzzard roundtables than tend to develop on AM, where each station gets a turn once every 45 minutes.

He indicated that he had been licensed since the 1960s, and didn't much like the direction ham radio has been going for the past decade or two.

The QSO was 100% arm-chair copy both ways. The NE beverage didn't pick him up so well, but I could hear him fine on the transmitting vertical, but even better on the indoor 5' square coax loop.

I heard Wa1QIX on 1885 last evening and waited as the signals built up...About the time I thought it was time to call, I lost Steve and a few minutes later I heard Don K4KYV come on...Don was never strong enough that I felt like calling him..He was strong here when we worked on the previous night... I was able to hear W7UO, Wes in Arivaca,AZ (near Nogales) but he was not strong enough for me to call...

Shouldn't this be in the 80 Meter Watch Thread?

Good conditions last night. Several stations heard on 1885 in NY state and one in Maine (a distance of at least 600 miles from me). I could even hear the low power drift-net CW beacons for the first time this winter.
