Mine was the last of the line; one of only 42 Vik II's of any flavor built in 61.

They're certainly not rare, seen a number of them over the years. Perhaps it was a reference to overall production number? When you consider that a lot of cities and towns had CD offices with communications centers and the Viking CDs were one of a handful of purpose-made sets, the numbers would seem to indicate just the opposite.

At least one New England state used a Johnson Viking Kilowatt at their station, and of course there was Hawaii with their KW-1 in the crater. This one apparently sat unused for years, and ended up as a prop for the original Hawaii Five-O series. I wonder if they ever put those big CD decals on the side of the cabinet?  Grin

I put mine on the air a few years ago with a minimum of work. Its now getting a complete restoration and then I'll baseline the audio before tearing it apart. R-13 opened which is what got me motivated Sad

Not one carbon resistor is out of spec but the paper caps are all leaky as well as the PTT and splatter limiter seleniums. Used SS for the PTT and scrapped the limiter. Id already replaced electrolytics but after removing the 8uF oil filled I see lots of burn/heat marks on the hidden side; putting 1000V on it with the Sprague Mod 16 tester showed excessive leakage current. I used a pair of 100uF 450V in series with 50K 7W equalizers.

Jack,

Check the 5R4 sockets and tube base to make sure they are clean since carbon tracking is often a problem.

The only resistor I remember replacing in a Viking 1 or 2 setup was an open 18K in the associated VFO-122, that Johnson resistor is a consistent problem whether the VFO is external or mounted inside one of their transmitters.  Like Carl I have replaced a lot of capacitors including one leaking (oil leaking) HV cap.
